For the first time in a long time
there was a heavy thud on my picture window.
An unfortunate Red Napped or Yellow Bellied Sapsucker lay dead.
The link above explains how they were once thought to be a single species
and now there are some hybrids.
One thing interesting about woodpeckers and sapsuckers
is that instead of three toes in front and one in the back
like most birds they have two in front and two in back.
Makes it easier to be upside down and sideways on tree trunks.

Re: Show your Bugs and Critters
Day before thanksgiving this falcon (found out it was a merlin) was injured in our yard. We caught it and took it inside in a box to keep warm. A park ranger from a local state park came up and got it, he rehabilitates raptors. Said its wing was hyperextended and not broken. My middle son who is 5 loves birds, especially hawks/falcons so he was super excited.

Thank you.
She is missing one antenna.
Noticed her on my tailgate.
Thought it was a bug holding a leaf at first.
Did not move her or touch her
to set up the shot.

Saw a few of these in South Carolina. Too many to be a rare albino. Apparently, there is an Eastern Gray Squirrel variant called the Brevard Squirrel that lives around here. Funny stories about their origin from a carnival long ago. Not sure that is true, but they are cool to look at.

That is a treasure.
You are correct.
"There are two basic types of white squirrels: albino and leucistic. Albinos have pink or blue eyes and no dark pigments anywhere on their bodies. Squirrels that have white coats and dark eyes are called leucistic."

Re: Show your Bugs and Critters
Awesome ! In a small city near me we have in an isolated subdivision with Red Squirrels that are off white with a slight tint of red . I guess a genetic issue from isolation .
