Sharpmaker and scissors

#1

Post by Ric »

I noticed my kitchen scissors does not cut cling film anymore.
Remembering the side slot of the Sharpmaker is made for scissors so I gave it a try.
With the brown and fine rods. But a little improvement but not much.
Then a few strokes on the diamonds and it cut through like a laser.

The Sharpmaker is really an impressive tool.

Hey Ric, thanks or the reminder that the sm is also for scissors!

Actually pretty much ALL of mine do need some sharpening... :smirk

Yes it definitely works for scissors. Although like is often said when it comes to sharpening knives, it seems to best for touch ups and not scissors with serious edge damage. Thankfully I have the scissor attachment for my Hapstone and use that for major damaged scissors. But for touch ups the Sharpmaker is easy and quick. It really is a genius design.

How does one put scissors on a sharpmaker?

It’s in the DVD. You insert a rod into the end of the Sharpmaker base, flat side up. It angles out about 11 degrees to the table. The scissors are held open with the flats of the blades in a vertical plan perpendicular to the long axis of the base, and at 90 degrees to the rod when seen in plan view.

The horizontal blade is honed on the rod with the other blade sticking straight up. The 11 degree slope matches the clearance angle on most scissors.

It works well for paper, hair, and fabric. For very tough materials a toothy edge works best because it grabs the media and prevents it from sliding away from the pivot as the blades are closed.
