Why not serialize Sprints/Exclusives?

#1

Post by infinkc »

How come sprints/Exclusives are not serialized (besides CC)?

Would think for a nice limited knife a company would spend the time to add a serial to it. Its just a nice touch to a not a run of the mill knife. Makes it even more of a special knife in my opinion.

Take for example the BHQ jade smock, it was a very pleasant surprise to see these were actually serialized. I bet not many know they were either. The TNP line are all serialized, past forum knives.

Also harder for scammers to try and sell off a knife they dont have as they cant fake a serial.

Another cost and another stop on the production line would be my guess. Over the manufacturing year that may slow things down too much for an already super busy factory. Flash batches are numbered if I remember right.

Is it really that difficult to fake a number?

I honestly dislike numbers on the blades. Place of origin, company logo and makers mark are more than enough for me. I usually avoid CC numbered blades when they come up for sale, so marking sprints and exclusives would make me less likely to buy.

The less markings the better.

Hi Infinkc,

We've done it in the past and we still do it for some runs. We used to serialize collaborations as well. As mentioned, just time and funds.

Doesnt have to be on the blade, like the Bombshell, smock are on the liner.

I wouldn't mind that

I do not care for numbers on the blade, that’s why I avoid CC knives. If it was on the liner I wouldn’t care, but I wouldn’t want to pay extra for it.

I'll pass. Then there would be even more drama about what number a person got and "oh this one is worth more because it's a lower number" or whatever. Plus I generally like less engraving so even when this does happen I really dislike the random number on the side of the blade next to the bug, I'd rather it was placed more inconspicuous on the back of the tang or something.

Reminds me of CRK birthdates and how an entire subculture developed with collectors moving heaven and earth to find CRKs with dates that have special significance to their lives.

Not that its a bad thing, though. If this gets realized, I already see numbers like 069 and 420 among other things to be prime targets for collectors and flippers alike.

If I ever sign up for the Spyderco collectors club, I would want the collector number 420. No shame! :winking-tongue

Spyderco currently serializes their flash batch knives, which I’m a fan of. I’ve always wanted to be the lucky one that gets the “0420” flash batch model! The Lil Nilakka and Darn Dao both have the serial numbers marked on the blade but the Bombshell is unique because the serial number is marked on the inside of the liner.

My “best” flash batch serial number that I’ve got so far is “0123” on my Lil Nilakka. Clean and easy to remember.

Mark the whole run "1 of 500" and people will be super happy to get knife #1.

Then later they'll realize that technically every knife in the run is 1 of 500.

I don't understand why it matters? Why would anyone really care if their knife has a number on it? It seems pretty silly to me.

I don't see any benefit to a serial number personally.

I'd rather they went with no writing on the blade at all if the idea is to make it extra special, definitely not more. There's too much writing already. Sterile would be a big draw.
