Slysz Bowie screws, detent ball

#1

Post by FX sniper »

Bowie needs new hardware screws and detent ball. Where to get correct sizes for screws and detent ball and where to purchase? Spyderco will not service the knife and they do not know the specs nor will they bother to find out. They avoid the issue and responded "I’m sorry due to CQI spec changes and that the knife was not manufactured here in Golden I do not have the specs needed."

no sense. :confounded

Odds are some maker has anodized titanium replacement hardware sets. Contacting them should get you the screw sizes, or just buy a set from them.

as for the detent ball, a set of calipers is your best bet.

Check BladesWeLove on eBay. He's really good at having the hardware for knives, and knowing which sizes are correct. He specializes in the colored titanium stuff but I've had good luck with more standard looking hardware with him too. He's a knife guy who actually goes through and test fits the hardware, so everything I've ever bought from him was a perfect fit.

It does make little sense, but to use a cliche, it is what it is. The suggestion to ask one of the 3d party maker of upgrades is a good one.

I don't know the specs and would prefer not to have to take mine apart to check. Hopefully someone here will know and chime in with screw lengths, thread sizes and detent ball size.

My guess would be you're looking for 2-56 screws but can't be sure until you're sure. If the exact length of screw you're looking for isn't available you'll have to order the next size longer than you need and just cut it or grind it down to size. It's easiest to do cleanly if you screw it into a threaded body with the excess sticking out the bottom and grind off the excess. This will keep the grind perpendicular to the threads and leave a clean beginning on the thread.

There are some screw options here https://usaknifemaker.com/shop-categori ... crews.html

Here are some detent ball choices https://usaknifemaker.com/catalogsearch ... etent+ball
Are you sure you need to replace the detent, and do you know how you're going to remove the old one and press the new one? Usually a little cleaning of the detent whole is all that's needed to make the detent crisp again.

If you prefer Ti screws you can find them at the links above and other places as well but these are the ones I use because I've found them to be of exceptional quality https://ticonnector.com/product-categor ... um-screws/

Ti Connector also has exceptional quality detents https://ticonnector.com/product-categor ... stainless/

Seconding the Blades We Love recommendation. Their hardware has always been great, in my experience.

I don't have a Bowie, but the only Taichung framelock I have (K2) has a .065"/1.65mm detent ball.

Edit: I'm fairly sure the hardware will be M3. All the Taichung knives I have use M3 hardware (excluding the pivot screw in the Hundred Pacer).
Currently testing: M398, D3, SLD-Magic

Wishlist: S290, Vancron, S125V, K890

13 Maxace, 9 steels

thx, yeah, could not find anybody except ebay lovesbladesguy. Vendors sell for all kinds of Spydies,....not Slysz Booooowwahhhh :sad-but-relieved

BTW,...why titanium screws? Other than negligibly lighter and the cool factor, maybe non-rust? Don´t they strip easier and more expensive?

It very much surprises me that no one at Spyderco has ever collected the drawings that have to exist of each model ever made. All the drawings should spec the hardware designed to be used in each model. The whole argument about it helping the producers of fakes is ludicrous as all the fakers do now is just to buy one model and tear it down. Withholding the information only hurts the real customers.

I don't have a SB but I replaced the detent balls in two Taichung models (Mantra & Sliverax) and I used 1/16" (.0625) (1.588mm) ceramic balls in both. I bought a pack of them on Amazon
