I've taken a look before, but I'll be honest... I'm not that nerdy when it comes to steels, all that stuff doesn't make much sense to me! Too many numbers/dots/diagrams for my simple mind That's a whole other level of the hobby that just doesn't peak my interest. I just know everyone around here praises it, when I've come to find it below average every time I use it and just wonder what the heck people are cutting to find it so amazing!Sharp Guy wrote: ↑Tue Oct 19, 2021 10:35 amIf all you're interested in is edge retention, looking at Larrin's edge retention charts, I can see how you might be disappointed. I'm not cutting all day with my knives at work. So for my general EDC use it's been great (but so has everything else I have haha)

Re: What Spyderco is in your pocket today??
From what I see it's a half a step above VG10 and about the same as Magnacut as far as edge retention. It's way above LC200N if that means anything. I think the better picture is how the edge retention is balanced with other properties (toughness, corrosion resistance, etc). I'm not really into the whole steel thing either. I'm interested enough to learn a little about it but the only thing that really matters to me is how the edge feels and cuts after I sharpen it. I like steels that are relatively easy to get a good edge that bites into a hard wood test block. I value edge retention some but, for me, most modern steels work fine. Corrosion resistance is also valuable to me but not as much as it was when I lived in humid N. IL. The S35VN in the knife I pictured today has been fabulous for meTkoK83Spy wrote: ↑Tue Oct 19, 2021 10:41 amI've taken a look before, but I'll be honest... EDIT: BTW, did I see you mention before that you liked V-Toku 2 & 52100? Edge retention on those is way below Cruwear

Hmmm. It's better than 3V which you seem to praise. I wonder if yours has a bad heat treat?TkoK83Spy wrote: ↑Tue Oct 19, 2021 10:41 amI've taken a look before, but I'll be honest... Re: What Spyderco is in your pocket today??
Wearing pocketless GTX pants today, I just realized how incredibly spot on the color match is between the LC200 Seki salts and the accents on my jacket
Re: What Spyderco is in your pocket today??
You’re one of the members here who really do put your knives through the wringer. I wouldn’t expect Cruwear to measure up to the high edge retention / wear resistant steels, but part of what I love is the compromise space it occupies. What are your impressions of toughness? Does it deal with use that would chip the wear resistant steels? Or do you find it doesn’t really excel there either? I need more time with my Z-wear shaman, but so far *I think* my Cruwear Millie beats it. Maybe it’s just blade geometry.TkoK83Spy wrote: ↑Tue Oct 19, 2021 8:52 amThis is my only coated Spyderco knife that isn't DLC. It's been used at work since getting it from the original drop for a few weeks total worth of time, very impressed with how the Ticn has held up!
More than I can say about Cruwear. Second day of use this week and it already can barely scrape shave, where on Monday morning before work it was popping hairs without touching the skin.
I honestly think Cruwear is overrated. I've had it in a Manix and Shaman as well and it has never impressed me. Sharpened to different angles, different grits...same lame results. Will give them one a fresh edge later and hope for the best.
