I want a new knife, but something different
Re: I want a new knife, but something different
Is it just me or is the Kapara missing from your collection?
Re: I want a new knife, but something different
Nope, not scared at all. I’ve been looking and looking. Seems like every time I buy though, I end up with one of the “greatest hits” models. And they’re greatest hits for a reason, they’re great knives.TkoK83Spy wrote: ↑Mon Aug 09, 2021 9:04 amMaybe not scare away, but certainly overwhelming if you're not familiar with a lot of the models. Definitely has a lot of options to look into now! Will be interesting to see how he breaks it all down.ladybug93 wrote: ↑Mon Aug 09, 2021 9:03 ami'm not sure why a thread like this would scare anyone away. there are some good suggestions in here. unfortunately for the op, asking for something different in a spyderco forum is going to get you a lot of different responses because that's kind of what spyderco does. it's one of the things i like about my spydie collection... i'm able to have quite a few (and even more on my list) and they have very little overlap, besides all being functional tools.
But I see stuff out there that’s off the beaten path, like the Sliverax, Ikuchi, Smock, Mantra, Caly 3.5, etc.
So I wanna do something different, and this thread was/is my way of finding opinions on the “different” stuff so hopefully I still get a good one since I’ll probably be ordering from DLT and won’t be able to handle before I buy.
Re: I want a new knife, but something different
If large knives are your thing I don’t understand why no one has suggested looking for a Tatanka!!!

Let’s say south of $200, although I wouldn’t shy away from $210 if I liked it enough. I don’t wanna drop 300 though. So we’ll say $200 is a “soft ceiling”
Re: I want a new knife, but something different
Thank you! That's a really generous offer, if I get closer to pulling the trigger on one I will keep it in mind! I really like Paul's eccentric designs and can't wait to see what he and Spyderco come up with next!
So it goes.
Re: I want a new knife, but something different
I didn't include the Mantra 1 because I don't consider it "weird" but it is one of my all-time favorite Spydies and could serve as my only knife if need be...
It is a fantastic combination of size, materials and functionality.
So it goes.

The Watu is mighty fine, but don’t overlook Sal’s other Ethnic, the M390 Pattadese (the Lil’Pattada). Really a delight.

I always got odd looks when I showed off my serrated cricket.

Re: I want a new knife, but something different
I would suggest the Watu which I love way more than expected. The blade geometry is pretty perfect.
Might have a look at the Pattadese myself, thanks wrdwright.
Re: I want a new knife, but something different
Wait for the upcoming YoJumbo Blacked Out (Black DLC coated blade and all metal hardware & liners) with a 3.98” blade length for $199.50.

Re: I want a new knife, but something different
As a cutting tool the Watu is a mean machine. Perhaps the best geometry of any Spyderco. As we know, it’s geometry that cuts.

Not quite so high on practicality, but weird/different/... POCHI!

Kapara! Probably already mentioned but definitely worth another.
Go Worker!
Hi Folks!
Something different? I'd say go with the Dark Green G10 Worker
Won't be easy to find though

Re: I want a new knife, but something different
If you have not yet initiated yourself with one of Spyderco's great Hawkbill blades them maybe it's high time you check one of those serrated Hawkbill folders out. The Harpy or Spyderhawk would be good models to start with.
Spyderco's GOLDEN, CO models are hard to go wrong with. Also if you've never yet had one of Spyderco's fixed blades then that would be a good place to check out.
Or just wait until they do the next Sprint Run of the Dodo model.

Re: I want a new knife, but something different
The Kapara definitely fills the bill for being different, but it also makes a great lighter duty EDC.
I don't get people who only carry one knife
Re: I want a new knife, but something different
Something about the Kapara doesn't seem that "different" to me. Carbon Fiber, S30V, compression lock, wire clip, fairly "Spyderco" style blade design. It's a nice knife for sure, but doesn't scream "different" in my eyes.

Re: I want a new knife, but something different
So I live about an hour from GP knives, decided to go visit.
Ended up with an Amalgam, Yojimbo 2 DLC, and a Tenacious LW tan scales with DLC blade. Wife got a Centofante and a Tenacious LW S35VN.
Others I handled:
Sliverax (didn’t like the ergos at all)
Ikuchi (too skinny)
Kapara (liked a lot, ultimately liked the others better but it’s on my future list)
Mantra 3 (liked, but liked the Amalgam better).
All in all, it was a good day, and good gifts for the wife also, since her birthday is this week.
