Abel Native Exclusive
Re: Abel Native Exclusive
Yea, it was posted on here a while back. Way too high of a markup for some aluminum and paint.
It really is a shame, I want that Rainbow Trout one...

Maybe you can find an aftermarket scale maker who will make you set of scales just like it?

Eh, I don't want one that bad. I doubt I would carry it anyways, the painted finish would look like crud after a few weeks(days) in my pocket.

Re: Abel Native Exclusive
I think they look fantastic. I love my Native 5 LW, but if I was going to spend that much on a knife, I'd get a Sebenza or a Hinderer.

Re: Abel Native Exclusive
Those scales are impressive! They look just like fish scales. But I agree, a bit pricey.
Re: Abel Native Exclusive
The scales are anodized, there is no paint involved.

Those are beautiful knives. Unfortunately they are way out of my price range.

Re: Abel Native Exclusive
I’m confused, in the description on their website it says anodized and then hand painted. This would make me think both processes were done.Mushroom wrote: ↑Fri Dec 28, 2018 6:14 pmThe scales are anodized, there is no paint involved.

I think you missed the part about it being hand painted after the anodizing.Mushroom wrote: ↑Fri Dec 28, 2018 6:14 pmThe scales are anodized, there is no paint involved.

Re: Abel Native Exclusive
No, I didn't miss that part. Obviously I can't say for sure, but I'm guessing their "proprietary process" uses brushes to achieve each anodized pattern. So they just, simply, call it "painting."Sumdumguy wrote: ↑Fri Dec 28, 2018 7:52 pmI think you missed the part about it being hand painted after the anodizing.Mushroom wrote: ↑Fri Dec 28, 2018 6:14 pmThe scales are anodized, there is no paint involved.

Re: Abel Native Exclusive
That's going to be one of those things that gets posted here in 15 years, with everyone saying "I've never seen anything like that--is it legit?"
Would be a great collectors piece for sure, but I'm not going to be into it.

Guess it depends on how you interpret this statement on Abel's website:
The handle scales are polished and Type II anodized by hand in Abel's custom shop in California. It is available in three hand-painted fish graphics: Bonefish, Native Brown Trout, and Native Rainbow Trout.
That statement makes it pretty clear to me that the graphics are painted on the anodized aluminum scales and nothing I can find in the thread you linked to provides evidence to the contrary. Do you have some specific knowledge that the graphics are "hand-painted" by selectively anodizing different areas of the handle? I've seen work of that kind done on engraved titanium handles, but if that's what Abel is doing here, you'd think they'd take pains to explain it in detail rather than just say "hand painted".

Re: Abel Native Exclusive
They claim it's their own proprietary process, so they might not want to give away too much information on that. I wish they did say more about it, i'd love to know for sure how it's done. I'm most likely overthinking it and it is just paint.
This is the only image i've seen of their process and is what lead me to believe they're simply using the term "painting" as a way of describing their process without giving away too much information. It certainly looks like little jars of paint in the background though.
(from their website - "Custom Finishes" tab - https://abelreels.com/main/finishes/)
Honestly, I would be a little disappointed to find out it's just simple paint. Aluminum anodizing in itself isn't that hard, but to anodize that kind of pattern would be mind-blowing and, in my opinion, absolutely worthy of the price tag. If it's just paint, as impressive as it may be, I start to agree with those calling it overpriced.

Re: Abel Native Exclusive
My interpretation was that the background color was anodized and that the pattern was hand painted.
Either way they are certainly gorgeous. I would love to have one but they are too expensive for this blue collar guy. I am sure I could make it happen but I likely wouldnt carry it so i have to pass.

Hard to imagine that a painted finish would hold up to pocket carry and use...hmmm

Re: Abel Native Exclusive
That's what I thought. Despite the rugged design and rust proof blade steel, at $500 this one strikes me as more a collector's piece.
I sure would hate to use it, and have that pattern eventually wear off.
