You might consider an Urban LW. You might even get lucky and find a K390 version, but the standard is within your price range. If you wanted to up the amount I would suggest a Delica.

If he's a beer drinker, you could always get him the Clip-it Tool and a couple 6 packs of his favorite brew.

That's actually what I'm considering for some friends for Christmas this year.

I like the Dragonfly H1 serrated. Maybe coolest budget buy. With teeth your buddy might never make it dull.

Elephant in the room question....how does it feel about made in China? Or made anywhere besides USA for that matter. Just something to consider.

If that's not an issue, I think the Tenacious is a great start.
