Changing Scales on Manix 2 - Any Tips on removing the screws safely?

#1

Post by felloffthetruck »

Want to put some different scales on my Manix 2 but I'm worried about stripping the screws with all the red loctite Spyderco is using.

Anyone have any solid tips how to safely remove these screws? I'v heard soldering iron, hair dryer ETC and just don't know.

Thank for any help you can provide.

Carefully. Yes, use heat. I even give a slight tap with a hammer on the torx tool to break the bond. Not sure if that really helps but I will try anything. And use really good torx bits. Wiha bits are hardened and dont strip as easily.
If it’s not moving, more heat.

They supposedly aren't using red loctite currently. So I guess it depends on when your knife was made.
I would first try without heat. Good quality bit. Don't force it. Use other techniques as needed.

When did they stop using the red loctite? The knife I have has a date code of KP.

On my blurple Manix I first attempted with my Wiha bits; didn’t want to budge. Boiled the knife for 15 minutes (not touching the bottom of the pan) then the screws were easy to remove :spyder:

I seem to have better luck than most (not trying to brag, I just very rarely have issues with stripping screws). All I do is use decent torx bits and make sure to keep the bit as straight into the screw as I can and apply firm inward pressure and try to turn the screw slowly. On a couple occasions I've had to hold a bit in a pair of pliers to get enough torque but the only screws I've ever stripped were the old style small Military scale screws.

2016. So there's a higher chance red Loctite.

If this is your first Manix 2 you've taken apart be warned: the lanyard tube is swedged so it also pinches the scales together.

If you're having a hard time breaking the loctite just use a soldering iron to heat the screws.

(obviously this all voids your warranty)
