I bought this on eBay for less than the price of a new vallotton. It was listed as a display model without box. I just received it today and noticed the blade was not centered. I tightened the pivot screw and got it centered. I decided to check the other screws and noticed one was just spinning. Then I noticed that the small piece of g10 on the right side had side to side play. I was very surprised when the blade popped open all by itself. Did I just get a great deal on an authentic auto vallotton?

It definitely functions as an auto. I was initially bothered by the metal bar which runs the length of the handle, since the my other vallotton does not have this. You can see it in the first pic. I now realize this is the spring to open the blade. Does the prototype stamp on the blade imply that Spyderco was planning on offering these as regular production?

Burch Vallaton does and sells automatic conversions of them. Where it says PROTOTYPE on yours is where he serializes them now. I think maybe you have one of his first ones. I don't believe it's a Spyderco prototype.
