I got that standard "rest assured your order is in good hands" email for KC today too, interesting that they are pulled from the site now. Does KC notify people with preorders that they won't fill them, or just stop sending them those auto emails?

In my experience, no, they don't unless you ask about it.

Also, many dealers have no idea how many they are going to get, so it is kind of understandable. They could at least undershoot it, estimate they will get 60% of what they might get, then email people that were looking for it if they get more than the 60%.

Hey Brian,
Have you gone through this specifically with KC? Preorder which didn't come through? I am asking, because this is my first time dealing with this.

I would think that a business like KC would have a pretty good mechanism for tracking this stuff, and would not take preorders they can't fulfill. Unless there is an issue with the supplier, and the 1200 pc run will not be completed.

With regard to KC preorders, I've only heard of one specific instance of KC taking too many preorders several years ago. Compared to some other retailers that allow preorders, KC is doing just fine, so long as these and future preorders are properly filled.

I would still recommend grabbing items when in stock elsewhere whenever possible, but it's nice to have a preorder as a backup.

*Searching through my emails*
Pre-ordered a Blue Manix 2 01/11/2010, it shipped 02/17/2010. Automatic email every week between those dates.

Pre-ordered OD Manix 2 03/25/2010, cancelled 04/05/2010. Cancelled (doesn't say if I requested it or not.) I do have a XHP Manix 2, but I don't have record of where I got it from.

Pre-ordered the Gray Para on 10/7/2010, it shipped 04/28/2011. Automatic email every two weeks between those two dates.

Ordered a Phoenix 1/1/2011. Automatically cancelled on 01/04/2011 because it was unavailable.

I guess based on my history I don't have much to complain about.

This is no good. I hope that other dealers will not follow this example.
"People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf"

My top choices Natives5, Calys, C83 Persian

I've had excellent success with several KC pre-orders but I've also managed to get in early each time.

I called KC a few months ago to see if they would give me some idea of my chances of receiving my pre-order for one of the Caly 3s. The lady informed me that I near the top of the list so I had nothing to worry about. I told her that I had heard stories of people not getting their pre-orders filled so I was looking for some reassurance that I would get one. She told me that KC was very good about making sure they don't take more pre-orders than knives they would be receiving. She did say that there was a time or two when they took a few more pre-orders than they should and she said it happened during off hours. I would think that by now they have their internet order system automated to stop taking orders when a certain number of orders is reached but you never know.
Of all the things I've lost I miss my mind the most!

Thanks for the heads up! Just snagged one. I decided I could do without it, but figured this was my last chance to get one at a decent price, so I couldn't resist :)

That’s good news these are still dropping. I thought they were already gone! I hope everyone who wanted one still gets one. It really is a superb knife, the Caly 3 is awesome.

Yeah, I'm a little surprised. The m4 and cruwear pm2 releases seemed to be all at once and when they were gone, they were gone. Wonder how many more are coming down the pipe.
