New kitchen knives

#1

Post by tortoise »

Well we just redid the kitchen, soup to nuts so to speak. Naturally then, we needed a few new matter-separators to go with it.

Yesterday we got 'em. We've started with a Santuko, an 8" carver and a 4" utility. Oh boy! I immediately made the world's biggest salad for want of veggies to chop and carved up a chicken.

More later -I'm just excited. I can't believe I waited this long to try kitchen-Spyders. I had no idea what I was missing.

Thanks for the feedback, tortoise!

I have been curious about the kitchen-Spyders myself for quite a while. I thought Spyderco only made pocket knives when I bought the kitchen knives I have now, otherwise, I would have tried the Spyders. I guess there's not REEEALLLY anything stopping me from mounting another knife magnet bar in my kitchen...oh man, bad temptations brewing...

One thing that amazes me is that Spyderco can sell their kitchen wares at such reasonable prices, considering that they're a smaller company than some of the cutlery giants that charge a lot more. I guess that's what happens when you don't run commercials on the food network and pay a celebrity chef to endorse your products!

Did you go with the plainedge or spyderedge?

Also, if anyone else has used the kitchen-Spyders, please post your thoughts!

The Santuko is plain, the other two have teeth.

I have found the "suction" thing when slicing vegetables like cucumbers with the Santuko. That's where one slice sticks fast to the blade until it's displaced by the next and so on. It's no big deal, but perhaps a reason to order a Homemaker too?

Oh yeah, I think so.

And funny you said it: the other accesory we ordered was a magnet bar.

Magnet bars are great - the absolute best way to store your knives, IMHO. They're always right where you can grab them, you can visually identify which is which immediately, they're protected from corrosion and edge scuffing, and you don't waste any precious counter space.

Plus, all that exposed steel just looks cool!

(Just watch out for any cats, birds, monkeys, or kids that might co-habit your house.)

Congrats on your new kitchen and Spydies, and shame on you for making me want to try them!

Tortoise,

Try giving the blade a squirt of cooking oil spray before you start cutting. It's a hint I picked up here some time ago and it works a treat.

Good tip Clay. Thanks.
I wonder if the KX04 Homemaker with the Granton Edge solves the sticky problem also?

Hello friend! "Exposed Steel” Oh dear, I’m starting to worry! I thought I had it bad!

You are absolutely right though; there is nothing better than a set of sharp, shiny, shapely, Spydies on show!

I bought a set of the Cold Steel kitchen knives some time ago as I spend so much time in the kitchen. A good set of knives can cut your preparation time in half! No pun intended, but what a great marketing slogan!

I have no complaints but I think that a set of Spydies would be incredible. I still have some free wall space, so if Sal would like me to carry out a comparative test between the Cold Steel knives and his creations, in a very busy UK kitchen, I would certainly be willing to help out. Please email me for shipping address!

Ken
