If you used both systems for a long time...

Which one do you think is better and why?

I think both have a place in my arsenal of sharpening tools. The Lansky types are better when you need to remove a lot of metal, the sharpmaker for easy touch-ups. The Spyderco is the most versatile.

My father always taught me not to trust a man who was not interested in cars, guns and knives.

I used the Lansky for many years. It is a good system, long learning curve. It is faster than 204 on really dull knives, but I always had trouble getting edges shaving sharp. Once you have a workable edge the 204 is superb, fast, and shaving sharp is easy. Shorter learning curve. I now use Edge Pro and 204. The Lansky has been retired.

What's 204?
What's edge pro?

What do you mean by "long learning curve". I got the lansky basic today. My endura shaves, but it's not razor sharp. It won't pluck hairs, but it removes them on my hand if I put the knife to the skin.

Thanks for the replies <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

By a long learning curve I mean it took me about ten or more knife sharpings to really get the feel for the Lansky. The 204 Sharpmaker three sharpings and I was getting shaving sharp results. I do think the Lansky is a good system and if you work with it awhile I'm sure you will get great results. Good luck.
