A linerless Ti Manix 2 (lots of pics)

Post by ferider »

Starting from the newly available Flytanium Manix 2 scales, a donor Manix backspacer and a spare Manix LW Pivot and Pivot screws that I had.

To replace the scale screws, you need 4-40 3/16 100 degree torx screws (a bit shorter than stock). Then you need to drill open the Flytanium Pivot holes. Finally make the lanyard spacer a bit shorter and voila.

Compared to a lined Manix (sceletonized) with Rockscale Ti scales (lighter than Flytanium since they have machined gaps for weight reduction)

Will replace the pivot screws in the pics with undercut 4-40 flatheads soon.

The knife feels great, amazingly thin, slicy and light. I don't use pocket clips on most of my knives, in case you wonder. Probably can ask the Flytanium guys to skip the holes or make them smaller, so they can be tapped matching Spydie clip screws.

Cheers,

Roland.

I really want to do this with G10 but I want the scales made twice as thick so I can contour them.

That is awesome; love projects like this! This looks like a bigger Chaparral, but with a better lock (can't stand back locks)!

Have you thought about sanding down the tabs for the lock so they sit lower?

Well done! I really like the linerless ti folders, thin but solid.

Very nice, indeed. I wonder what such a knife would cost if Spyderco made this in Golden? Probably a lot more than I can afford.

Yeah, want to do the same. I have some OD micarta 1/4” slabs set aside for this. I have a CNC so if I had a 3d model or spend some time making a model I can do that.

I wonder if there’s a 3d scanner service out there that is really accurate. I really want this to be dead-nuts perfect.

I've been debating this, not hard to do. But I actually like the tabs sticking out so far, makes the knife easier to close, even with one finger. Form vs. function, I guess I'll be picking function ....

I can shape it myself, I just need someone to make all the proper holes in the right places and counter sink the holes and such. I could even work with rectangular slabs and do the whole shape myself (I'd actually kinda prefer that).

Update:

- hard to find better Pivot Screws, so I decided to "countersink" the washers instead and am happy with the results.
- Carried the linerless M4 Manix for a couple of days, and really like it. So I decided to do a second one, stainless and hollow ground, as a complement for rainy days: :)
