Am I missing something. $520
I like the design and materials. But, I thought made in Taiwan cost less to make. Certainly not for that price point.
What makes it special enough to command that amount of $.
Maybe for around $350-400 and even at that I'm still scratching my head.
There's not very many peasants I know of will be able to afford to put this one in their pocket.

It's all one piece titanium, near flawless build quality. It's geared towards a particular market like the Nirvana. Way outta my league.

Not all models are suitable for all pay grades. Spyderco offers plenty of other models that even peasants can afford.

Even Chad Nichols Damascus SR1 can be had for less the $400.

I have zero doubts the price is reasonable, given the cost of producing the knife. However, I find it ironic that I paid less than that for a custom Scott Cook Lochsa, the first of the integral frame locks (almost 15 years ago ).

I don't think Spyderco actually saves that much money by using their Taiwan (Taichung) factory. One, because it is very expensive to ship USA steels, etc, there, and two, because the production standards at that factory are extremely high. I'm sure the currency conversion helps somewhat, but from everything I've heard, the main reason that factory gets certain designs is because of capacity and capabilities.

That said, it's definitely way outside my budget, but then again, that's the same reason I don't own any customs either.

And they are still great quality. Look at the Byrds. One time period's technology is another time period's magic. Can you imagine how Dark Ages people would react if they were teleported a crate full of Byrd folders?

From Spyderco's standpoint it's good business, they're one of the top dogs in the knife industry so if they can make and sell a $500 knife more power to them.

I don't really mind, they're constantly coming out with interesting new stuff at just about every price point, there's something for everyone.

I've held off on the Nirvana because I want this knife! Since buying my first integral from LionSteel, I'm really enjoying the aesthetics and machining that goes into these knives.

With the exchange rate, shipping and 10% GST (goods and services tax) we pay here in Oz it turns out a very expensive knife for us colonials and a bit more than I’m prepared to pay for any knife. :rolleyes:

Luckily for us all, the market is flooded with innovative new designs (and a glut of high-quality iterations of old designs) at unbelievable prices.

I don't think integral framelocks are worth the extra coin and I don't buy them. I don't buy knives from a bunch of shops for that same reason.

I also don't wander into a company-owned forum just to complain about how a particular design doesn't meet my needs. If there's a specific design element you think Spyderco's ignoring (stock clips on low-volume-high-price designs, for example) that might be fair, but this kind of thread is just rude.

There's no excuse for a knife costing this much, aside from having platinum inlays or being diamond encrusted or something. But there is a REASON. And that's the last shred of capitalism that remains in the market. There is an audience that is willing to pay these prices. Where there is demand there will be supply.

One may ask themselves "how does Greg Medford stay in business?", after all, he charges a good $400-1400 for knives using d2 blade steel. I don't even know if it's CPM D2, but that's irrelevant. I will never buy a Medford knife. It has nothing to do with Greg Medford being a bigger tool than your average splitting axe; it's the price. But the market isn't all about me, it's about everyone. I can't afford every knife I want and I don't complain. You know why? Because complaining doesn't help. I DO call it like it is though. The Paysan is certainly overpriced. But that doesn't bother me in the least. I hope Spyderco sells them all. Go get em!

I'm of the mind to not say a knife isn't worth what it costs until I try it. I was skeptical that the Slsyz Bowie and Sebenza were worth what they are until I got both. And then spending $200 on a fixed blade felt stupid to me until I did that twice and was overjoyed both times.
Of course, a few have been not up to the price, but that's been an exception for sure.
