Reprofiled 2018 S90V PM2 Forum Knife with the UF Benchstone... ONLY!
Reprofiled 2018 S90V PM2 Forum Knife with the UF Benchstone... ONLY!
Okay, I'll come clean, this was not a complete reprofile, alarmist thread title aside, let me explain.
So I haven't done any freehand sharpening in a very long time, preferring my Sharpmaker, a new Tormek, and a new KME system instead. But, all this talk on the forums lately made me want to get back into freehanding. We all know the key to a proper technique is practice practice practice right? So I took my brand spanking new 2018 forum knife, a PM2 in S90V steel and set about polishing off the coarse Spyderco grind marks with the Spyderco 3x8 Ultra-Fine bench stone.
Four hours later, I present to you the mirror-edged results (under magnification no less)!
Now, I'll hear no more complaining about how the Medium brown stones aren't coarse enough for reprofiling!

Okay, that was all tongue in cheek, I'm a bit slap-happy after standing at my kitchen counter for over four hours. Honestly, though, this is a great way to practice freehand sharpening for pros and novices. The UF stone isn't going to cause any major damage to the hard S90V, and the S90V isn't going to harm the ultra-hard ultra-fine bench stone. My old muscle-memo... er... um... proficiency returned quickly and I remembered why I like the freedom found in hand sharpening over clamp-type sharpening systems.
Oh... and one last thing... that four hours... yeah... that was just for ONE side.

Yeah I would have reprofiked on the KME and finished on the UF for practice. Different strokes.
More K390 and 10V, please.

That's some serious dedication! Cool that it can be done though.

why though? I could replicate those results in 15 minutes.

Sounds like an exercise of repetitive motion.

Holy sheep dip, Batman! My forearm would have gone through pain to jelly to rigor mortis after that. And I probably would have dropped the knife into my foot.

Four Hours Later  !!!! Well Brother ZATX all I can say is that you beat me hands down in the "PATIENCE" department
But I'm so glad that you posted this thread about Spyderco's great ULTRA-FINE stones  I remember all the way back to about 2002 when I got my very first set of Ultra-Fine stones for my first 204 Sharpmaker. I also remember talking to Mr. Glesser at the 2002 BLADE Show and he gave me some tips on using the ULTRA-FINE Stones. It's not often that I don't finish a sharpening job with one of my Spyderco Ultra-Fine stones. There's a couple of blade steels I like better with a little bit of a toothy edge which the regular FINE Stone does a superb job of.
I've yet to get that bigger 308 Ultra-FINE stone but it's on my list of things to add to my sharpening arsenal. I know there are a plethora of different sharpening stones out there on the open market but I've never had a set of Spyderco stones ever disappoint me.
One last thing>> My Spyderco 302 Benchstone is all I ever use to sharpen straight razors with
