What little Spyderco is next

#1

Post by BLUETYPEII »

I’m looking to add a small knife to my Collection, I’m talking 1.5 to 2.5 inches +- This will be a light duty knife. The ladybug is out, I already had a lock fail on me. It does need to be a Spyderco though. Maybe a squeak?

Your suggestions will be much appreciated.
FYI no serrated edges or combo edges.
Thanks!

Chaparral! :) (though the actual blade length is 2.75, but closed it's just a tad longer than a DF)
Top three going by pocket-time (update March 24):
- EDC: Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10); Wayne Goddard PE (4V), Endela SE (VG10)
-Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), and also Wayne Goddard PE (4V)

Rhino or vrango (if you could find one)
Awesome knifes, personal opinion though.

McBee
Dragonfly (best small lightweight knife - feels like 3inch blade)
Lil Native (a small tank)

Victorinox Rambler (perfect lightweight multitool / knife)

I’ll be getting the VToku2 Meerkat when that drops. That’ll be my suggestion to you. Unique lock, great steel, great color. Definitely has a place in a collection. :spyder:

Squeak and Urban are pretty nice. The K390 Urban is extra nice.

It's too bad we don't have many super steel LBK's.

The Lil Native and Chaparral are awesome smaller blades that have great ergonomics. I have XL-XXL sized hands and BOTH are fantastic using the finger choil . The Chaparral for ultra slicey cutting and Lil Native for heavy duty "utility blade" EDC. Both have solid locks that will not fail IMHO.

Squeak is a nice little knife. Pretty solid action for a non-locking knife.

You can still get the Lil' Lum on closeout from a couple dealers.

If you're going to pair it with a bigger knife, don't overlook the Spin.

It has an incredibly comfortable and secure grip, and vanishes in a pocket carried clipless. The straight edge works a lot better than an edge shape with belly in a knife this size IMO, gives you a lot more control.

It's a bit small to be the only knife one carries IMO, and the wharncliffe edge presents some limitations.

The Rhino is dope.
McBee looks handy (or the Spin)
Also, the Cricket is a classic.

I like the Urban LW, but it is a tad longer in the blade than your max of 2.5" at 2.6". The Dragonfly is a great knife and can be had in light weight or G-10 models. You might also try the Lil Native (I would prefer the back lock, but there is a compression lock version, as well).

Dragonfly 2 or Lil Native. The Cat is okay as well.

Another vote for the Lil Native. Also, the Cricket is about the best d@mn package opener I've ever used with its tiny little reverse S blade.. highly functional for the size. You can never go wrong with a Dragonfly either..

Thanks for all the suggestions. The spin would be great but I can’t see spending that much on a knife of that size.

As of now it’s between the dragonfly in VG-10 or the urban lightweight in Bohler N690.

Please give me some pro /con between the 2.

Obviously the urban is non locking anyone think that’s an issue?

2 solid choices. Personal preference territory. The slipjoint action of the urban, if its like the squeak, is pretty positive and stout feeling. I have a DF2, and an Urban is on my want list.

I'm a big Slipit fan, so the lack of a lock isn't an issue for me. I think the Urban is a great model. Curious to hear more about the issue with your Ladybug's lock failure though if you know what happened?

I think the Urban has a more comfortable handle than the Dragonfly, but I would try to handle them in person first if that's practical for where you're located.
