Show your newly sharpened edges!

#1

Post by The Meat man »

Yesterday I spent some time sharpening up my Maxamet Native and CPM S110V Military on my Hapstone V7 sharpening system. Both edges turned out better than I've ever gotten them before without a microbevel.

I started with the 220 grit Venev diamond, then finished with the 400 grit. The Military seemed to apex very well and deburred without much difficulty (quite an accomplishment for me). It can just almost whittle a free hanging hair, slices phonebook paper at 90°, and feels way sharper on my thumb than it's ever been before. I'm super happy with how it came out:

I did the same with the Maxamet Native - started at 220, finished at 400. This one turned out even better than the Millie:

Needless to say I'm pretty pleased that I was able to get them to this level of sharpness at a relatively low (400) grit finish.

Anyone else have some cool edge pictures to share? :)

Weird looking hatchet I sharpened for my son-in-law's coworker. Couldn't get it to cut a free hanging hair (just barely shave). He had initially sharpened it with a grinder (first pic) and I think he overheated the edge.

I'll post some spydies later.

I did basically the same with my Maxamet Native a couple weeks ago. Hapstone V7 & Venev bonded diamonds. I checked the edge after the 400 grit and I could've stopped there (it was sharp!). Instead I finished with 800 grit and I'm happy with how it turned out.

I'll post some edge pics later. I have my Mantra apart on my work bench and I'm trying to fix a flat detent ball. :)

What did you use to sharpen that hatchet?
DMT 220, 325, 600, and 1200.
Stropping 30 micron diamond powder dry on wood (I realize this is back-tracking, but it leaves a great finish and eliminates burr immediately)
Stropping 9 micron on wood (dry diamond powder), then 3 micron on leather (Tormek honing compound with diamond powder added).

No one seems to use diamond powder. The cutting aggression is unreal, especially on wood. You can skip steps, even on s110v and see good results. Obviously adding diamond powder to compound increases the concentration immensely.

Thanks guys, but I feel more lucky than skilled. :D
The next trick will be to be able to get them this sharp every time.

Nice.

I've taken some of my knives past 800 grit, but I almost wonder if my higher grit stone (1200/2000) is slightly warped. It seems that if I move up to that level I have to adjust the angle rod very slightly to match the previous stones.

I don't really have much desire to go over 800 grit though on my knives, so it's not a big deal.

Here are the last two I did, excuse the poor image quality on the M4 blade — all pics are screen shots of videos I took:

Image
Image
Para 3 S90V/CF - reprofiled to 18.5 DPS
- Venev Resin Bonded Diamond 150 grit
- Edge Pro Diamond Matrix Stones 650, 1100, 2300, 4000
- Jende Industries Max Concentration Polydiamond Emulsions at 4 and 2 micron on basswood
- Ken Schwartz PCD emulsion 1, 0.25 micron on kangaroo

Image
PM2 CPM-M4/CF - 19.5 DPS
- Venev Resin Bonded Diamond 150 grit
- Edge Pro Diamond Matrix Stones 250, 650, 1100, 2300, 4000
- Jende Industries Max Concentration Polydiamond Emulsions at 4 and 2 micron on basswood
- Ken Schwartz PCD emulsion 1 micron on basswood, 0.25, 0.1, 0.025 micron on kangaroo
- Ken Schwartz PCD spray 0.005, 0.003 micron on kangaroo

The S90V was whittling hair at 0.25 micron. The M4 was effortlessly whittling hair at 1 micron. Probably was doing it at 2 micron, but I didn’t check. By the end of the progression, the M4 edge was just popping hairs as soon as the hair made the slightest contact of its own weight on the blade. Unbelievably sharp. Other than the burr, M4 is easily my favorite steel to carry and sharpen.
More K390 and 10V, please.

These all look great guys! I’ve personally grown to enjoy free hand sharpening, and especially love Spyderco’s stones. For quick work on a new bevel, I like to use my KME 300/600 diamond stones but even so I am doing that by hand. These are some examples done by hand. I know it doesn’t show much detail but I have sharpened that sheepdog so many times for practice. The blade shape and steel (vg10) make it a breeze, and I always end up with a razor edge. I recently patina’d the vtoku-2 dragonfly, and polished the patina off of the factory edge with an ultra fine rod. I really enjoy working on vtoku-2 steel. Like the vg10, I always come up with a razor edge. The Domino has a mirror edge, and is much wider than when I received it new. I don’t have an angle gauge but that edge must have been 25+ degrees. It must be around 20 degrees now and I plan to take it down to around 17 next time it needs a new edge.

Some much maligned VG-10 to 600grit SiC and light strop on stiff leather and chrome oxide.

Image

This is my Southfork’s (S90V) edge. It’s a bit of an experiment. 120grit SiC, a few passes 220grit SiC and a few light passes on Fine SharpMaker rods at 30deg.
Not the sharpest knife in the street but an aggressive coarse edge.

CTS-204 Military after using it last week; gave it the diamond stone progression from 100 to 1000 grit, finished it off by stropping with Kangaroo strops (.05 micron cbn emulsion) :spyder:

Used a KME for the first time this morning. Reprofiled a Cruwear PM2 from 140 to 1500 using their diamond hones; took less than an hour even with all of my initial fiddling.

Here are the results without stropping or microbevel:

You oughta change your name to mirror guy :0 those are excellent!
Zatx, that looks really nice. Is that micro serrations we can see there? Or is the edge a little chipped from the diamonds? I just haven’t had a chance to see any of my KME’s edges under such magnification.

If I ever got my edges to look like that, I'd probably never use the knife! Well done Pat.
