Bent Blade, Para 3

#1

Post by gull wing »

First off, this is not a negative post, I love my Para 3 M390. There is non better for me than M390.

I just discovered this yesterday when I tested it on a block and yes, it sure was.
The blade never parked center since I got it. When I tried several times to center the blade to no avail, it finally came to me to test the blade for straightness.

This is unusual, as I don't think I've ever had a bent blade from Spyderco.
The blade park is ok, it's not bad, just wanted this great knife better. Yes, that is pickey. ;)

Is it bent or is the grind off center?

Looks like bent, but this is what I did to test:
Lay blade on super flat surface, press down on pivot area. The blade tip rises higher on one side than the other.

My Swick 3 is slightly bent too. Laying it flat on a bench stone and doing a stroke, the middle would be ground less than the heel or tip. Was annoying setting up a bevel on it, but it cuts alright now. Would have sent it in but it was discontinued a few years before I bought it.

Looking at your photo are you sure its a bent blade and not a centering issue?

Looks like a centering issue. Take that pic again, but of the entire blade if you can.

Only Spydercos I've ever seen with bent (warped) blades were Calypso Jrs. They were notorious for having that issue. Am guessing your Para 3's blade is probably ground off center, rather than bent or warped as I'm not seeing any curvature on your photo. You could always send it to Spyderco to find out if they consider it acceptable.

In my first post I stated I tried several times to correct off centering, but my technique may be ineffective. Anyway, it's ok as it is.

Thanks for posting. It would be great if this never happened, and it would also be great if we lived in a world where we aren't always second-guessing these sorts of posts.
I'm curious about Spyderco QC standards for warping/grinding, but I'm also glad it's not published info, else I'd go into my collection and check every single knife to see what's "good" and what's just "close enough."

I had a bent Mule Team blade once. It worked fine (insert joke here about it not closing.) All of my Spyderco folders, however, have been straight.

Don't fret. Send 'er in and Uncle Sal will take care of it, if there's a problem.

I'm SURE you have a back up knife or ten. ;-)

How would this even happen? During the mfg process or just from being made from bar stock with a slight curve in it?

Still no pic of the entire knife, instead of just the tip?
I'm banking on a centering issue. Bent blade on such a thick, stubby blade, seems so unlikely.

Is there a chance that the floating stop pin isn't fully seated? This caused action problems on the early CQI Millies IIRC, but could also plausibly create a situation where the blade is skewed to one side.

It would be easy to diagnose with the blade out of the knife as well, hold the tang flat against a level surface, then if the tip is higher/lower off the surface when the blade is flipped, you know that it's the blade, not the handle/scales (though it could still be ground off center, rather than bent/warped).

I'm not saying it can't happen, because we're all human, but I would be surprised if this is a bent blade out of Golden. As others have said, it's most likely an assembly issue. I would send it back to the factory to sort out.

Apologies to Golden and all. This blade was not bent.
As is said before, tried several times to adjust it to no avail.
The problem was the peened lanyard tube, threw the liners/scales off.
All is well, please forgive me.
