Manix 2 or Manix 2 XL ? Help !

#1

Post by Reiver »

Hi Folks
Looking to get my second Spyderco to compliment my Para 3 and can't decide between the Manix 2 and Manix 2XL ?
Does anyone have both and use them for outdoorsy tasks and game prep ?
Thanks in advance

I prefer Para 3 over PM2.
Manix 2 was a bit too large for me.
So I would go for Manix 2.

Manix2 LW is very popular for a reason. I still have an XL but it never really grew on me.

Be aware that the S30v version of the Manix2 is noticeably heavier than the sprint runs/exclusives because the steel liners a solid rather than skeletonized.

How big are your hands? The Manix 2 is a full sized pocket knife for small/med hands. But you might prefer a large knife with the xl. For camping you might prefer xl anyways. Search for a thread called manix xl abuse.

C101GPDBL2 is the cheapest Manix with sceletonized liners and regular production. Great knife.

Cann't answer the original question, as I have both and like both knives. The Manix 2 is incredibly versatile for house, yard and camping, and offers a cool variety of steels. But it's difficult to cut a water-melon with it :)

XL is better in every way aside from being heavier. XL all the way. The extra length gives it added versatility, and the large pinky hook on the butt of the handle makes it much more secure in hand than the mini manix.

I’d probably go Manix XL too, it’s an easy choice S30V. Lately I’ve started favoring larger knives. More cutting edge, easier to cut larger objects, and you will end up with longer edge retention due to the wear being spaced apart to a larger area.

Manix XL isn’t huge either. It’s under 4” so that is easily manageable I think.

Xl definitely.
BRING ON THE MANIX XL SPRINTS AND EXCLUSIVES! And 10v or K390ify the Golden lineup, please.

Top 5 folders I’ve owned: Serrated Caribbean Leaf, Shaman, Manix XL, ZDP-189/CF Caly 3.5, Native LW.
Top 5 steels I’ve owned: LC200N, K390, CPM S90V, M390, CPM REX45.
Top 3 steels I want more of: M390 class, A11 class (including K390), CPM REX45.

The Manix 2 is my favorite folder and preferred EDC.

I'd go with the Manix 2. If you want to do game prep, I'd skip the lightweight (my personal favorite flavor--especially the Maxamet) and go with the standard flow through construction for easier clean up (and the screwed construction if you need to take it apart to clean it up). If you're going to be involved with meat processing, I'd probably go with the S110v, because it holds a working edge almost forever and it's super stainless.

From a guy who owns almost every variant of the Manix 2, and most of the XL variants, that's my two cents.

I own several XL's and I really never carry them. The standard size fits my hand like a glove, and working the lock is effortless for me. The XL just doesn't line up well to my hands--for example the lock activation feels awkward.

I have both in my EDC rotation and will carry either one to my office. I would prefer the Manix 2 for most EDC but for outdoor tasks definitely the XL. If you don't have large hands you might prefer the standard size.

If you can find any, pick up the manix backlock on clearance for $100. It is well worth it. I think it is a lot nicer made than the cbbl variant and simpler too. If not, than go for the xl.

Well, now that you talk back-lock: let's not forget the original Manix and the 80mm Manix. Roughly the size of XL and Manix 2, respectively, but with thicker S30 blades. Not crazy expensive if you are a bit patient. But some very solid knives ....

I am a great fan of the Manix 2, and especially the now discontinued backlock (that you can still buy at a great price -- hint, hint).

I have an XL, but in that size range I like the military better, and the police 4 even more.

But if you really really like really big knives, then the XL could make you smile.

the manix is by far my favorite spyderco. i also like the xl, but for a woods beater, you could save some money and get the resilience. it’s a great knife for the money and you don’t have to care as much about damaging or losing it. it’s also easier to touch up in the field (not that s30v is super difficult). if you’re set on getting a manix, i’d say go all the way and get the xl since you already know the regular manix is larger than you want to edc and you’re only getting it for specific scenarios.
keep your knife sharp and your focus sharper.

If you dont have frying pan size hands, the XL will be an overkill.

I have smaller hands and prefer smaller knives in general. That being said I own several variations of the Manix 2 and one Manix 2 LW and really enjoy carrying and using them when I want a larger knife. I've handled a Manix XL and it's way too big for my types of use.

My Manix XL and my Resilience have become my "truck knives" that live, one in my truck and one in my ol' sedan. If I actually want to carry a big knife I go for the Police or Military, so these don't get any time in my carry rotation, but it is always a good idea to have a knife in the vehicle. Of course a good fixed blade is a great choice there as well.
