SFO Fantasy

Post by MichaelScott »

Let’s say you walk into SFO one day and Eric and all the staff are there to greet you. Balloons and sparklers appear. Big hoorah! You are the official umpteenth visitor to SFO and you get to walk out with any knife that is for sale in the store.

Which one do you pick?

Hmm, tough pick... probably either the Bushcraft or the Police 4.

Yeah! I am on with that. And I was saying (wrongly) the other day that Spyderco doesn't offer that many fixed blades. I don't know what I was thinking.

I had to check on this knife. My ink blot association thing went: Gayle Bradley --> M4 steel. But this blade is PSF27! A steel I don't really know anything about. It'll give me something to do searches on and read about tonight.

Gads! I’d drive from New Hampshire for this one.

ETA: Just caught wind of Fradon’s 4V Manix2 exclusive and got ready to pounce. But the saber grind and marbled G10 quickly dulled my enthusiasm. Evidently, my interest in 4V has limits, but driving distance ain’t one of ‘em if everything else is aligned.

I thought you'd never ask! To keep it simple and not get off on a tangent about odd prototypes, sprint runs, and discontinueds, I'll say this: The Ouroboros designed by Paul Alexander.

Hi Tom,

I know nothing about PSF27. From what I can glean I think it's like a powder version of D2 and performs like S30V with favourable reviews, but I have no idea. :)

Hi Tom,

I know nothing about PSF27. From what I can glean I think it's like a powder version of D2 and performs like S30V with favourable reviews, but I have no idea. :)
I am learning that it has the same composition as D2, but is "spray formed", which makes it sorta like the PM steels we know and love. It is not unreasonable to compare it to Cruwear, which some say is an improved D2. PSF27 has 12 percent Cr, while Cruwear has about 8, so PSF27 should be more corrosion resistant. I keep hearing all these good things about D2, so this would be a way to try it out if you got lucky with your SFO fantasy visit. If D2 is good, this should be great.

Another option is a little brother called the Junction, which is a Spyderco fixed blade in PSF27 that has just been discontinued and therefore is available at an attractive price. A mere 4 inch blade though.

I was there last month. No balloons, but I did walk out with a Chaparral.

That said, I am with Tom. The Bradley Bowie would have been a score!
