Over on CPF I saw an EDC picture including a Swedish barrel knife. I don’t believe I’ve ever seen or heard of these before. I’ve attached a few pics and a link to a thread about the knife. I think it’s an interesting concept and imagine Spyderco could do some really fun things with the design elements.

Swedish Barrel Knife
Re: Swedish Barrel Knife
I have a couple that were passed down to me from great grandparents. They are very cool, unique designs. But I personally wouldnt buy a modern version of it tbh

Reminds me of an Opinel knife.
Never worked out why they are still popular.
Anyone enlighten me ?

Re: Swedish Barrel Knife
I've wondered this myself. They seem about as durable as a toilet paper roll.

Re: Swedish Barrel Knife
I looked it up.
High carbon steel (seems few available), easy design, can get crazy sharp, well known maker, known quality, cheap price (although not in Australia). Blade shape great for slicing. Other comments were the Patina you get on carbon blades.
In some ways a bit like why I like and use Green River high carbon skinners over say Victorinox or Inix or one of the others.

Because Opinels slice better than almost any other folder you can buy, and they're dirt cheap. If you're just cutting up things and not abusing them they are plenty durable. Maybe you should buy one and see for yourself, they can be bought for less than $20. It also helps if you like carbon steels.Brown_Recluse wrote: ↑Sat Nov 10, 2018 11:26 pm

I've batoned with various Opinels with no ill effects. They're plenty tough.Brown_Recluse wrote: ↑Sat Nov 10, 2018 11:26 pmI've wondered this myself. They seem about as durable as a toilet paper roll.
Anyways, why they're still popular:
- You can buy any size for under $20
- Their cutting geometry is superior to basically any knife on the market aside from chef knives
- Stainless or carbon
- Extremely light
- Easy to sharpen to a very fine edge
- The handles are simple to customize with a more personalized shape
- The round handles and lack of a clip give them very nice ergonomics for a folder
- They have that whole vintage european feel some people get into
