Cool thread here! Could bring forum members that live fairly close to one another to meet and form real friendships! Find it a bit odd with those being secretive...i don't see this being the place for someone to try and hunt someone down to cause harm. Great thread Sal!

Have you ever taken note of the base of the Spyderco Forum feed?

I see that the spyder BING is scraping everyone's data. I assume that Google search does likewise. If you are trying to remain as anonymous as you can, don't use the same username on forums. Mix it up and don't post any identifying information.

If anyone comes looking for "you" they use a search engine and will look at 5,000+ pages of info. Employers and placement agencies do it all the time.

I will reply since I was the outspoken one about my anonymity. I have made many friends on here and on bladeforums. I have met dozens of forumites in person and communicated with many in other ways including email, PM, FaceTime and phone calls. I have also bought and sold with quite a few on here. There are many forumites who know where I live. I like to think that I have made some great friends online through this hobby.

That said, this is still the internet. Nothing wrong with being cautious in my opinion. I have openly shared my real name so I am not being too secretive.

You can each go to this link, update Location and save it. You don't have to be too specific. For instance, I just say SoCal, USA on mine. Southern California has a population of about 24 million covering 57 million square miles.

Knick knack, you were 3 blocks from my house at that wedding. Would have invited you over for a beer if I had known.

Wow, our daughter is at the Bay of Islands right now.
Hi Michael, it's a beautiful part of NZ. We have taken visiting family and friends there a couple of times. I hope your daughter enjoys her stay.

Even for those who worry about things like that, just listing a state or country is fine. Nobody's asking for their GPS coordinates, but some folks ask questions where the answer may not be the same for someone living outside the USA as for someone living here. Heck, there are even some where the answer will vary within the USA, either due to knife law issues or transit time.
