No sharpening November

#1

Post by tonijedi »

This crazy idea came to my mind: what about a no sharpening November? Probably many of you are aware of the "no shave November", what if we did something similar to our EDC knives? :D
The plan is simple:
- carry one and same knife the entire November;
- never sharpen it
- share your experience

Who's in? Which will be your EDC choice?

It's an interesting idea, although I'm just waaay too OCD to see it through  However, if'n I did, I reckon I'd choose either S110V or M4 for the task.

A challenge, you say?

I haven't carried my S110V Native in a while, I'll try this challenge. It will be hard to keep the Caribbean out of my pocket, but we'll see!

I would pick something with a lot of carbides in it and high hardness to minimize the edge wear and rolling. For the tasks I use and what steels I currently have, k390, s110v and rex45 come to mind. Oh, and a low grit toothy edge to make sure that it will cut even when relatively blunt.

That's a fine idea. I'll pick my PM2 in S30V.

I’m growing a bigg-*** moustache, but not carrying only one knife.

(Why doesn’t this forum let you say a$$? I don’t consider it a curse word.)

Funny you say that. I'm going to be moving and so I literally just packed all my sharpening things up besides an UF rod and strop. I think I'll partake. SE Wharnie Delica and a s90v native.

I'm not in, because I'm too lazy to take the time to report my experience. Maxamet Para 3 would be an easy choice for me if I were in. The thing stays sharp forever.
Time for another :spyder:!

I'll Take Part in this, I'm no stranger to giving a steel a one month run after sharpening. I will choose the Para3 in CPM 4V for this challenge. One question, can you strop the blade during this challenge? I was able to keep the Rex45 Para3 hair whittling sharp for almost a full month and only stropped it 3 times during that month.
Every Steel Has Its Appeal

Im down for it, I’ll probably carry my composite blade manix 2 if any of my knives can stand up to a month of use with no sharpening I feel like it would be that one.
Just a man with a plan and a knife in hand.

I might do this with my s110v Military. It'll be quite hard though, because I'd want to use that knife exclusively and not use others to scratch my sharpening itch. Maybe I'll just go as long as I can and share my experiences with how it performs day by day.

It’s not possible for me to tolerate a dulled knife.

I'll use my Endura SE which will easily get through a month without sharpening.
3 x Endura 1 SE, 1 x Endura ? CE and a Black Pacific Salt. Want Aqua Salt, Fish Hunter and a Pacific Salt Yellow.

Yes, it can turn out to be tough!
Anyone can always start and give up, the important thing is to get to know your knife better, get to know yourself better and share the experience.

I'm thinking on either the SE Salt 2 or VG-10 Delica.

I haven’t shaved in years. I did just trim the beard up a tad a couple weeks ago for a job interview but I still have a full beard.

I don’t know which would be harder. No sharpening for a whole month or carrying the same knife for a month. Well, obviously not sharpening. :D But I am not down for either. I have picked up too many new knives lately to shelve them all for a month.

So no shave November is a definite. No sharpen November is not likely. I look forward to hearing about the experience from others.

I might give it a go with 8cr13. Outside of my kayak fishing, my edc knife use is fairly light and I’m sure I can make it a month without sharpening. I’m curious how the steel will perform. I like the way 8cr13 sharpens and I like the edge it takes. I haven’t used it a ton but it seems to hold an edge good enough for me for an edc...we’ll see.

I'd be worried that I couldn't get it sharp again. It's much easier for me to just touch up than let a knife get dull in the first place. It would be interesting to try if I had more skills and patience.

It's a fair concern, but it's also an excuse :p
Try it and if you think it's time to give up just tell us your experience. If you don't play you'll never know ;)
