Forum knives of the past

Postby Doeswhateveraspidercan » Wed Oct 10, 2018 12:27 pm

I was looking but could not find past forum knives, does anyone know what they were? I know there was a Military in 440V it is on sale on ebay if anyone is interested going for around $300.00 right now.

Maybe we could start a list here? Looks like in 2013 the Native 5 in S110V

The Military was from 2000.

Also the maroon 2015 Forum Native 5 / S90V

I find it really ironic that the 2003, Blue handled, VG-10 PE Spyderhawk at the time was probably the lowest selling of all the Forum knives at the time of it's release. But now I'm finding it the most sought after for collections. I got two of them at the time and I still get my "user" version out every so often to play with it. It's one of the few plain edged Hawkbills I've found actual uses for. It's so strange in a way that many Spyderco models that are a flop at the box office during their run on the main line up tend to be super collectible as time goes on. On top of that I bet you would have a very difficult time even finding a blue, PE, VG-10 Forum Spyderhawk ( new or used).

I think they did do a few of the yellow H-1 Spyderhawk in PE but even those are getting extreme tough to find as well.

Here are examples of all the ones for this forum, to date:

2000 Forum Military

Image
2002 Forum Centofante Vesuvius

Image
2003 Forum Native III

Image
2005 Forum Dialex Adventura

Image
2006 Forum Chad Los Banos Lava

Image
2009 Forum Native

Image
2013 Forum G-10 Native 5

Image
2015 Forum FRN Native 5

NOTE: Despite what it says on the blades, Spyderco made nowhere near 500 of either the Forum Military or Forum Vesuvius.

It's a nice concept for the knife community here, but i like none of them. I don't like all the extra laser engraving on the blades or logo's in the handle. It's also why i won't be going for the 2018 knife.
The one thing that i do really like is the Diamond-Cut texture G-10 from the 2015 knife. I'd love to see more of that on knives.

But in the end I think there is too little involvement from the forum community in the forum knife design/material. Why would i invest in this when i had no influence? It doesn't feel like a community thing. I don't buy something just because it will be a limited run. If it is ugly or not the knife model/material i like i will just skip it.
You can clearly see that other forum knives were better designed. Take for example the EDC Forums Exclusives. The laser engraving is a nice forum logo (i can tolerate that, just like i like the LC200N or H1 steel logo) instead of some dumb text and it has unique moonglow handles.

I think the Shaman in Micarata + Cruwear would make a great forum knife if it comes to fruition. We had some involvement into the design and like the materials used. And if Spyderco is worried about the funding (Shaman sprint would not be cheap) they could even fund it with a kickstarter. So we as a community sign up/pay for one and then also have assured we will get one. Many of us would hate to miss out on that Shaman sprint we designed. This is also how people got that Creely Mako REX 121 Knife made. With funding secured maybe Spyderco would dare to take a little more risk and listen to the community?

I agree with you on the extra blade engraving it is too over the top it for edc but see nothing wrong with it as a collectors piece or for someone speculating on the resale value.

The steel really should be more exceptional the 2000 military used the standard steel for the time but now with time 440V is no longer readily available so it has some value now IMO.

I for one would love to see another Military as a forum knife but lets have some fun with the steel with something like Elmax. I have 2 of the Lionspy because I love the shape of the blade but it is the expert use of polished Elmax steel that makes that knife exceptional Spyderco got that one perfect.

You also bring up another excellent idea: A Kickstarter campaign I for one would jump all over a MIlitary in CTS-XHP with a DLC Coating and Orange or Red Scales.

EDC Forum did the Manix 2 XL in glow-in-the-dark for 2015. I have mine stashed away in a knife roll and I'm too lazy to grab it at the moment. I do know that it did not have the year etched onto it anywhere, just the EDC Forum logo, so I searched my email and found the confirmation from February of 2015.

Edited to add: it was done in S30V

Good catch. I should have remembered that, as I have one! I've updated my original post in case anybody references it.
