custom colors

#1

Post by ladybug93 »

i'm not sure if this has ever been discussed or not (although i would guess it has), but has spyderco ever considered offering a customization service?

i don't know if it would work for knives manufactured outside of golden, but it seems like you should at least be able to order any of the more standard blade steels a knife comes in with any color handle that knife comes in and dlc coated or not.

for example, i would like to try s110v, but i really don't like the "blurple" scales, so i've not ordered any. however, if i could order a pm2 in s110v with od handle scales, i'd probably be down for that.

what about a native salt with grey handles?

what about a dlc coated manix 2 in s30v with a black lw handle?

what about a dlc coated yojimbo 2 (s30v) with red scales from a trainer?

i'm not sure what the market would be for something like this, but it doesn't seem like it should cost spyderco extra if they are already producing and stocking all of the parts and just letting us special order a specific knife. i assume it would cost more for their trouble, but would it really be that much trouble if all the parts are already available?

finally, can i come work at golden and assemble custom orders? :D

Here we go again! Haha :)

To help the OP out here's one such thread. There's been a lot of other discussion about this other threads. It's been a bit of hot topic lately.

We keep bringing this up from time to time, but Spyderco so far has been cool about it. It is difficult for them. Buck can do it because they are a huge company. Even Benchmade is probably bigger. If Spyderco did do something like this they would have to stick to one factory/country only. For example, only Golden knives, or only Taichung knives.

I think you bring up a good point ladybug, it would be awesome to customize the aesthetics from the factory without having to buy a whole new knife to swap. With that being said.... I do love all the sprint runs because it gives a chance for the user to disassemble them (at their own risk) and really create something special.

Never thought I'd take a part my original PM2 because I loved it and thought it was perfect... until I noticed the stop pin was rusting so I used it as an excuse to operate, and since I was going in deep already I invested in aluminum Flytanium scales. Using Nick Shabbaz's video as a reference, an extreme amount of patience, as well as, trial and error... Presto-change-o I have a unique s30v pm2 (not the best pic of her, but it was right after I finished screwing everything back together).

i read through the most recent thread i could find via searching. sorry for picking the scab. i didn’t realize there were such strong opinions against an idea that would get more people what they wanted if it could work. i thought it was fairly innocuous, but apparently it’s not. i’m surprised everyone doesn’t love the idea with how much dreaming and wishing about different combinations are brought up here constantly and how few will actually ever come to fruition.

it’s cool, guys hang on to your sprints and exclusives... wouldn’t want to hurt your investment in semi-rare products that a small group of people may or may not want to purchase if you ever decided to sell them someday.

sorry i didn’t do a search first. and i’d still love to work at spyderco, even if i’m just the moron walking into a forklift.

i agree. i even went so far as to say it should be limited to pieces already available. nothing extra to stock. just use what’s already there and offer custom combinations.

it’s a shame if benchmade is bigger. i’ve never handled a knife of theirs that i liked. a lot of them look and feel cheap to me. i know that’s not a popular opinion, but they seem like flea market knives with good steel.
