Yojimbo 2

#1

Post by ladybug93 »

with all the talk about the blade hq m4 yojimbo 2, i've realized that i've been sleeping on this knife. it's been easy for me to ignore in the past, but i read some comments, which led me to watch some videos (including the evolution of the yojimbo), which led me to research in the forum, which led to me now really wanting one.

first, some questions...

1. should we be expecting any more production models out of golden (other than s30v), or will these always be sprint runs and exclusives?
2. i've seen it mentioned multiple times that people wanted a tougher steel for edc. is s30v not tough enough in this design for edc tasks?
3. is there a problem with m4 for sd applications and how much tougher is m4 than s30v?
4. i live in a highly corrosive environment. is there going to be a dlc coated m4 version and would dlc get in the way of sd applications?
5. what about a lc200n version? (i think it would be nice for sd blades especially to be as fuss-free as possible and stain resistant enough to ride iwb)

thank you all for your input. this knife came out of nowhere to me. somehow, i've completely overlooked it in the past two years since i came back to spyderco. i definitely want to get one in my hands and check it out in person. i've been wanting a comp lock knife for a while, but the aesthetics of the pm2 never did it for me and i don't find the handle as comfortable as the manix 2. the yojimbo has an odd handle shape, but even if it's less comfortable than the manix 2 (i don't know yet), i still like the purpose behind it enough to overlook that. i've heard it's really comfortable anyway, so i'm not really worried about that.

anyway, i really like the fact that the yojimbo is built for self defense, but also works well for edc and has a comp lock but isn't the same pm2 that everyone is carrying. also, my first knife was a ladybug way back in the day and i absolutely loved it because it had that amazingly cool kind of ugly going for it. the yojimbo follows that tradition well. it looks so weird and ugly and amazing. no offense, mr. janich. i really think it's a great design and can't wait to get one.

Grab the Yo2 in 20CV! Sounds just right for you.
20CV has a ton of Chromium in it. Very stain resistant. :spyder:

yikes! that's too rich for my blood. i've never spent that much on a knife and i don't think the cfo will start allowing it now.

If the 20CV is too pricey I'd get the S30V. It's tough enough for EDC and the chances of a Yojimbo Salt are slim. There is a LC200N Swick on the horizon though.

i just thought it would be nice for iwb. it wouldn’t have to be a full salt version. it’s not one i’d carry in the ocean anyway. i definitely want a longer blade and serrations for the ocean and the pac salt is pretty much perfect already.

There is the DLC S90V version, which would be as close as you'll likely get to a salt version.

i thought i saw them in a few places, but it looks like they’re all gone. it’s alright. maybe i’ll wait for the m4 version to come out with dlc (hopefully?) or another sprint run down the line.

I started carrying one of my identical S30V YO2s last October (10-3-2017), so it's been my EDC for a year now. I'm in the desert, so the steel issue is moot. The handle really surprised me - especially when opened, with the forward and rearward taper. The tip up carry clip just works for me, with the pinky - middle - ring fingers resting there before opening. A DLC blade would maybe possibly be the only reason that I could come up with to get a third.

I think I've had nearly as much rust issues with S30V as I have with M4. Like Vivi I have some pretty acidic sweat and all it takes is the right conditions and I've even had S90V get surface spots. Strangely enough I haven't had these issues with my Sliverax, which makes me wonder if there aren't some differences between Golden and Taichung S30V because I've carried my Sliverax on a few rain soaked days without it rusting.

Maybe you can find one of the DLC/S90V versions?

S30v is very underrated in the corrosion resistance area. Many of my work knives are s30v and I also live in a very humid environment and work in an area unaffectionately known as the "cajun oven." My knives stay covered in sweat and I rarely find a speck of rust on my s30v blades. And when I do its a tiny speck of surface rust that wipes off with a paper towel. One of the reasons I love s30v, it seems like a perfect balance of corrosion resistance, toughness and edge retention.

Very strange that our experiences are so different, all of my s30v are of the Golden variety.

I'd bet the surface finish makes the most difference.

I just recently bought a standard S30V Yojimbo, had it 6 or 7 weeks now. It's absolutely one of the best made and best put together knives I own, it's perfect, and I own 5 Taichung made Spydies. The lock and the action are just awesome, I only open it with a middle finger flick and it flies open like a rocket with that big heavy blade! Do I wish it had a different steel? Yeah, probably? But I'll say I've had great luck with S30V but I also like a little variety. I can think of 10 different steels that would work great with this package!

The handle shape also works great, feels locked in my hand. And it's not as big in the pocket as it looks, takes up nowhere the space a Manix does! I keep a new Spyderco purchase list, the Yojimbo has been at the very top of that list for two years but for whatever reason it always gets kicked aside for another model......bottom line is I should have bought one two years ago!
