Brouwer: Initial thoughts

#1

Post by SG89 »

Opened this guy when I got home this evening. First things first, I love Mr. Brouwer's "maker's mark" ... Happy October everyone :) Image
I'm comparing the Brouwer to my most carried knife, the Lil Native. If you are a fan of slim knives the Brouwer is for you. Like a Native got put on a diet. Love it.

Here's the before and after with stock clip and mxg gear 2 screw clip:

This little guy cuts like a demon, is lightweight, and with the help of a deep carry clip, makes for a wonderful office edc.

Love the "skinner" blade shape, but not buying anymore S30V (have plenty).

But, if an exclusive drops in 3V, without DLC

Does the Brouwer not have a stop-pin??

Also, not sure why they couldn't just move that pocket clip down next to the lanyard hole, instead of below it..

Looks like an internal stop pin. I also don't understand the clip location on a lot of new models. I don't obsess over deep carry but this one seems to ride really high out of the pocket for the size of the knife.

Nice touch to make it an internal stop pin. I actually don't really like deep carry because your always grabbing at the clip to pull from the pocket which just makes it harder to retrieve... I like the Spyderco hourglass clip b/c it gives you that nice little screw area to grab from, but no way does a knife ever need to ride that high in the pocket!

Can anyone comment on the blade deployment from a left-hand perspective? Looks like the hole is tucked away a bit more on the lock side, but I'm sure you can still get your finger in there to flick/push the blade open?

I am getting pretty hooked on Spyderco and kinda itching to pick up my first Taichung piece... wondering if this is a candidate?!

Here's the internals:

For those who are interested: I have small hands and fingers and cannot middle finger flick this knife open due to the lock bar blocking the hole. However this knife will thumb flick open very easily.

I really like the blade shape on this knife. I am less excited about the frame lock. I love the color, though.

I really like this implementation of an internal stop pin. No huge channels carved out of the blade to weaken it.

I do like this knife. I think the clip brouhaha is trivial since many won’t care, those who do can replace it or do without. Frame locks on pocket knives when well done are a non-issue. I like everything about it but the price and that is only a personal dislike since I think Spyderco knives are not over priced for what you get. I have paid more for a Spyderco and thought that it was worth it.

I agree on the price keeping people away so I waited for an ebay coupon and best offer. Coupled with an aftermarket clip the price of both was still less than MAP. Just FYI for those interested in this knife and a deep carry clip and wondering about price.

I put a Lynch offset Para 3 clip on mine. So far, I'm really enjoying this knife!

Love the Green G10, and the blade shape.
Not so the huge choil.
Could use something else besides the S30V, I have way too many.

From Spydergirl's photos, it seems about the same size as a Chaparral. Is this right?

Price will keep this one out of my collection, but I do like the looks. Clip does seem way too high too, looks like more effort should have been spent on a clip that works better with that lanyard hole.
