Nitrogen-Alloyed Knife Steels
Re: Nitrogen-Alloyed Knife Steels
Sanyo has a series of Nitrogen-alloyed superhigh speed steels and Hitachi has some Nitride-based sintered ultrahard materials.
Of course also Bohler-Uddeholm N-steels are intriguing.
It would be interesting to try them :)

Doc
my knife is 5mm thick, but the other two will be surface ground thinner, maybe 3mm?
I cannot buy any more round bar N680 cheap enough, but I do have a 8 inch slice of X15, which Boker used for a while. 6mm thick, but also can be thinned out.

Larrin, this was a great article...once again! Thank you for sharing the results of your research.Larrin wrote: ↑Mon Sep 17, 2018 6:20 amIn this article I cover the basics of nitrogen-alloyed knife steels....

I’m not familiar with those. Can you provide a link?

Re: Nitrogen-Alloyed Knife Steels
I searched for Nitrogen, and only found Nickel based high speed Sanyo products.
The charts should show N, not Ni...

Another great article Larrin. I'm looking forward to the one about H-1.

I wonder if Spyderco would do a Mule Team. They haven't done damascus with Nitrogen steel.

That’s cool. I’m interested. Some sprints in steel like this could be great.pdptrow wrote: ↑Sat Sep 22, 2018 8:16 pmI wonder if Spyderco would do a Mule Team. They haven't done damascus with Nitrogen steel.

I've tried to search some other information on the SPC X series, but Sanyo, like all the japanese steel manufacturers doesn't say so much about their "special products".
In practice they say nothing, but when you see a steel with a working hardness of 71 Rc it must be something serious.
Re: Nitrogen-Alloyed Knife Steels
Ok I see. It's also interesting that Sanyo does vacuum induction PM steels.
