Caribbean: Hottest Spyderco Available!

#1

Post by Sumdumguy »

I am in love with this knife, it has relegated my Native 5 to nightstand duty. It is synthesized perfection.
Furthermore, I have undeniable proof that it is the HOTTEST Spyderco currently in production.

Feast your eyes on the backside scorching Caribbean:

Hmmm...I didn't really care for the looks of the handle at first, but the more I see it the more I like it.

I might be more seriously interested in this knife if I hadn't heard the rumors about a folding Waterway. I'm really hoping that one comes through!

It transcends aesthetics! It is a thing of beauty in use. Everyone who thinks the PM2 is the best thing ever need to give this knife a try, it is just plain better.

The Military would be a better comparison. Caribbean's blade/edge specs are almost identical to the Millie, but in a package the size of the PM2. It also feels smaller in the pocket than the PM2.

Spyderco hit a grand slam with this one!

Agree, love many things about this knife, the steel, action, fit in hand but I have a couple of beefs. I carry it everyday and work on a boat, often reaching for it in the dark or in awkward spaces, I can’t look down for it and a couple of times the weak detent has left the tip exposed and it’s cut me - and given the edge I can get on LC200N I bled! I’ve had to relagate it to a pouch; not my preferred carry option. Also would like a lefty model, I can work a RH compression lock but my LH PM2 showed me what a joy the comp. lock can be, so anything less is...well, less.

I'm not totally sold on the looks and shape (tall), but this knife is a bargain for what you get. A premium steel, full liners in LC200N , titanium hardware/clip, milled G10, compression lock and a blade that is larger than a PM2 with the top notch Taichung fit and finish. This all for not much more than a basic S30V PM2. Makes me wonder why the Shaman is costing more.

At least with the salt knives you can be certain you don't need to disassemble to dye it.

I would recommend you do anyway. There is surely some lube in there somewhere that might block the dye. I'd take it apart just to thoroughly scrub the scales clean.

A weak detent? Compared to what? If like the PM2, I’m still in on getting one. If like the Bradley Air (which opened in the bottom of my pocket once, and one too many times), I’m probably out

What say other Caribbean owners?

The detent is much weaker than my pm2. I was able to shake it open without straining myself. My pm2 would require full body thrashing to get it to open.

Forgot that it has the LC200N liners. Does it have the ceramic detent?

I believe so, I thought they had the original steel ones replaced with ceramic after initial production. Correct me if I'm wrong please.

I have the sheepsfoot model (SE) and the detent is strong enough to keep the knife from being shaken open. Not as strong as on the Maxamet PM2, but about the same as on the Ouroboros and my old, original, Paramilitary.

The detent and lock on mine is so strong it can’t be wrist flicked open or closed while depressing the lock, even after months of break in time. I like it that way though. No chance of it opening in my pocket at work.
BRING ON THE MANIX XL SPRINTS AND EXCLUSIVES! And 10v or K390ify the Golden lineup, please.

Top 5 folders I’ve owned: Serrated Caribbean Leaf, Shaman, Manix XL, ZDP-189/CF Caly 3.5, Native LW.
Top 5 steels I’ve owned: LC200N, K390, CPM S90V, M390, CPM REX45.
Top 3 steels I want more of: M390 class, A11 class (including K390), CPM REX45.

I can't speak for anyone else, but mine is impossible to shake open. I can use the inertia technique to open it, but I can do that with a Pac Salt too.

If it makes any difference, I say go for it. If you don't like it, I'm sure there is someone who would take it off your hands somewhere. ;)
