Post by mgnmdngg »

GUYS!!!

could you PLEASE tell TAICHUNG to spend the extra 30 seconds per knife to BREAK THE EDGES on the spyderhole? Its basic CQI IMO!!

i handled multiple taichung knives this weekend at the USN show

brouwer, drunken, paysan, kapara, rhino

ALL of them have SHARP edges on the thumbhole!!

cmon guys! you have the best production knives in the room but minor details like this make a difference

You can easily remove metal from the hole edges, but you can’t put it back. I like the sharper edges for the increased traction.

Can't say I noticed sharp edges on the hole when I had a Rhino. But then, I might have enough callouses on my thumbs that I couldn't feel them.

Disagree heartily. I want there to be a sharp lip on it to make it grip better opening.

If I recall correctly, they're left sharp intentionally to help your thumb grip the spyderhole when you're opening the knife.

It's a lot easier for the ELU to break the edges of the spyderhole if they want, than it is for them to resharpen the edges.

I noticed the sharp edges on the hole of my Viper Kyomi being out of place with every other edge on the knife being chamfered. I noted this in my YouTube review of the Kyomi, and Jesper Voxnaes himself took the time to reply: He explained that he asked Viper to leave the opening hole edges sharp for better purchase when opening the knife with gloves. Since then, I've grown to appreciate opening holes that are left sharp. I wonder if Spyderco is intentionally having the Taichung factory leave opening holes sharp for similar reasons. As Michael Scott has so keenly noted, user who don't like a sharp hole can easily chamfer the edges themselves, but the reverse is a much more difficult proposition.

It actually is a testament to the high level of craftsmanship that factory is capable of achieving. Sharp edges mean precise machining. I always expect to sandpaper a spot or two off the Taichung models.

At first I didn't like the sharp edge either.

Now, I wouldn't have it any other way. ;)

Hi Mgnmdngg, Ugaarguy,

Yes, We intentionally leave the opening holes crisp for better traction. We used to chamfer the holes back in the 80's. We learned over time that best to keep them sharp. As mentioned, one can always remove the crisp edge.

Marble or ball bearing Spyderhole-sized + jeweler's rouge/sharpening paste + elbow grease = no more sharp edges.

Problem solved

The only knife I felt like breaking the edge on is my Salt 2 - the hole and the spine of the blade. It was not only sharp, but seemed “toothy.” Much nicer now. But the rest I’ve left as is.

Personally, I'm a fan of the crisp edges. Especially around the hole. It provides a solid purchase allowing my finger to grip and push the blade open with little chance of my finger sliding off. Just my 2 cents. :spyder:

I like sharp edges on the hole. My Sage3 was so sharp it opened my thumb up. A few seconds with a ceramic rod and it is still sharp but not dangerously so. They definitely don’t need to come that sharp but that was just one knife out of the boatload of Spydies I have owned.

The spine jimping on my Pacific Salt was a bit aggressive - it wanted to catch on my pocket when pulling it out or putting it back. I touched the edges with some 800 grit sandpaper and it's fine now.

The opening holes aren't an issue for me though.

What’s with all the exclamation marks lately? Rude, to say the least.

Crisp holes are far better. Easy to fix in seconds.
