Worst things to cut thread

Heavy scaled fish like large Snapper will dull a knife quickly. The scales are the size of 50 cent pieces and you can’t cut through them no matter how sharp your knife. The first couple of sawing motions behind the gill just grab the scales and move them out of the way. With time you learn better techniques to preserve your edge like cutting from the inside out but certain fish and scales are still going to dull your edge MUCH more quickly than others.

Without really thinking about it I cut some fiberglass window screening the other day. WRECKED my edge.

Aside from all the stuff mentioned already featuring ceramic/stone particles-

Yoga mats and those textured floor mats really blunt an edge fast- and as I was looking for nice clean cuts, doing my usual of breaking out the Harpy or Matriarch wasn't an option

YES! I didn't think anything of it, because the knife just sailed through it. Then when I tried to cut something else, I discovered that the edge was completely destroyed.

I use a standard box type knife, with cheap razor blades you replace when dull.

we once hired a guy to lay and install ceramic tiles on our floor and lent him my delica to open the boxes containing the tiles. man.. this really scratched up and ruined the blade's tip

ended up doing exactly this with my hawkbill DF2. Spent some time with the sharpmaker and it's almost back to where it needs to be. More work on it tonight.... :rolleyes:

Hey Bloke, that's why hoof nippers were invented! :)
Guess I baby my Spydercos too much. Anything crude that's going to be unusually hard on the blade, I grab a nearby utility box cutter. Got them in the house and garage. I've heard baling twine easily dulls a blade so I've got a large cheap knife stuck in a bale in the stack just for that reason. At this point it's barely sharp enough to cut warm butter.

Had an old Cold Steel voyager that I used for a loaner Boss took it one day to open a large bag of rocks. He turned my SE in to PE in a matter of minutes.

Either ways some of those barefooters living in dry paddocks have hoofs like glass and make any knife work near impossible. That said I’ve never used anything other than a dedicated hoof knife on a horse but I’ve wondered how a high carbide blade like S110V would perform.

I've cut plenty of baling twine too, but just a bit here and there. Never a heap in one session and it doesn't seem to hurt any edge in that I've noticed at least.

We use bailing twine to make "Cracks" for stock whips here. :rolleyes:

I cut open a bunch of plastic 60 lb. bags of concrete a few weeks ago. Went from shaving sharp to butter knife after a dozen or so bags.

skateboard grip tape. Extra thick, low grit sandpaper with strong adhesive on the back.

Used to use my Tasman Salt SE every few weeks for the job. Laying the flat side against my skateboard, the chisel grind was super easy to control.

Tough to beat grip tape in this category. Fiercely abrasive AND sticky.
