Phil had given me the privilege of stopping by his shop to hang out, talk about steel, heat treatment and edge testing.

Big thanks to Phil for Sharing with us.

I had a great time. Always soothing to the soul to find others that are very passionate, more knowledgeable and very experienced to have a in-depth conversation about Metallurgy and Knife performance.

We tested the New Vanax Superclean steel, CPM154 K390 and Rex121

Thank You Phil

-Shawn

Wow. Thanks for sharing that.

I'm trying to imagine what one of Phil's knives made from Rex 121 would be like...his K390 is mind-blowing enough.

Great video. Big thanks to both of you! I got to talk to Phil about Vanax several months ago so it’s good to see him getting to play with it. Ive cleaned hundreds of fish now with my Vanax fillet knife and Though I haven’t done any scientific testing, I feel like I get a bit more (I’d guess 20-30 percent) use out of it between sharpenings than I do with cpm154. I have always been very happy with cpm154 in a fillet so to get that kind of performance out of a steel that has proven to be completely rust proof makes it a total winner in my book.

I learned something new from Phil in that vid. I had previously been measuring behind the edge with a micrometer under a magnifying light. I just tried using the end of my dial calipers like Phil does and I was able to get right on the shoulder. It looks like a lot of my BTE measurements are actually less than what I've been posting in the BTE Database thread. Looks like I have some measuring and editing to do. :o

Truly a great knife blade shape to the knife he is holding.
I might cave eventually ...

That’s was a lot of fun to watch. I cringed when he started digging the edge into that very hard bocote. Yikes!

Someday, I would love to see Mr. Wilson write a knife making book (a la David Boye). His designs are so classic, and he has a clear mastery of the craft.

Rex121, Vanax, dialed in Heat Treats, so much awesome in this one.
Always admired the down to earth attitude of Phil Wilson, all while he's pushing to find the extreme limits of cutting edge newer steels.
Combine this with Shawn, a sharpening MADMAN, and budding knife maker. Good stuff!

Gotta ask about the CBN bench stone (since no one else did). Was this Phil's? Or did you deliver it to him? Is it one of your prototypes?
800 Grit? Are they available? If so, where?

Thanks man,

CBN benchstone? It's 1 of 5 of my Vitrified CBN stone prototypes. A gift to my friend Phil. 600 grit, not available yet, very expensive to make. More information another time.
