Yes for sure! My hand does not change size just because the blade is longer or shorter. Even in folders where the blade has to be shorter than the handle, the handles does NOT need to shrink just because the blade is shorter (my biggest problem with almost all shorter blades). Make the handle a good, ergonomic shape and size, and design the blade for whatever its design objectives are to be, but only change the handle for a good functional reason. Does not matter how great the blade and steel are if you can't control or use it comfortably!

Hi Fdahood,
Welcome to our forum.
I'm leaning to make it in Golden.
I'll need some type of guard for protection from sliding.
Not planning on any exotic or very expensive steel.

Ditto. Love the Native-like, no hump design. +1 for BD1N.

Re: New fixed blade - need help
BD1N is the steel of the (near) future for people who aren't hellbent on having the be all and end all of wear resistance. And it's got a pretty fair amount of wear resistance. I can't wait to see what other tricks steel makers do with nitrogen enhancements over the next few years, but if I'm planning a general purpose knife right now, that stuff is great.
Re: New fixed blade - need help
Another vote for BD1N based on Sal's comments.
They who dance are thought mad by those who do not hear the music.
Re: New fixed blade - need help
Another vote for bd1n, or bd1. The latter has performed very well for me.
Re: New fixed blade - need help
I'd be into BD1N as well.
I'm very interested in seeing what Spyderco does with this steel.

Time To Resurrect The TEMPERANCE 1 Model
The original TEMPERANCE 1 model from the 2004 era is still about my all time favorite Spyderco fixed blade. Even in VG-10 I still consider it one of my favorite Spyders to use in the kitchen and for many outdoor uses. Also it was one of the few fixed blades that Spyderco made in Spyderedge and plain edge both.
It would be an excellent fixed blade to make in GOLDEN being it is an "In House" design. The ergos on the handle are excellent and the blade length is also ideal. I still use both my Spyderedged version and plain edged versions of the TEMP 1 model quite a lot after all these years.
The TEMPERANCE 1 in a newer/better blade steel or having it in the Salt Series in SE & PE in LC200N would be ideal for an iconic fixed blade.

Re: New fixed blade - need help
I didn't comment on the steel I'd like to see, but BD1-N is an excellent choice, and gets my vote
Re: New fixed blade - need help
Sounds like a lot of interest in BD1N.
From previous threads this sounds like a steel worth trying out, and from the supporters here, a ready market :) Count me in!

Re: New fixed blade - need help
I like lower priced fix blades... If BD1N is available, that sounds good because BD1 the lowest priced steel currently used in Golden, right?
Re: New fixed blade - need help
Sal, thanks for the opportunity to provide feedback. I have no comments on steel; you and the crew know much more than me to make the decision.
1) Offer in two lengths: a sub-6" and a >6" version. The large version should be made from heavy stock in proportion to length and width.
2. Eliminate the sharpening choil, please. The Wicked Edge does not work well out of the box on Spydercos; in order to smoothly use it, you have to cut off bits of plastic. While this doesn't harm anything (except resale value) it is a PITA.
3. Handle scales should be G10 with checkers/ribs, but: they should be easily replaceable. That will make it possible to "dress up" your knife with material of choice. It also opens up a third party market. A selling point could be "show us your scales" and give the winner some publicity in your magazine and/or website. This "build your own" competition will likely provide some input on future handle design.
By doing 1 and 3, the user can make a necker or a machete.

Re: New fixed blade - need help
I like the picture shown well enough. I like a budget friendly stainless, and perhaps a version in tool steel (being a FB and all). I also like the handle scales being removable.

Re: New fixed blade - need help
It seems like there's some real effort going into keeping this one affordable. I like that.
