PM3–what would it be?

#1

Post by JonLeBlanc »

If the Paramilitary were reiterated, what would y’all like to see changed? I reckon there might not be too much seeing how it’s a very well designed knife to begin with, but who knows... always room for some improvement! For my part, I’d like to see the blade lengthened just a few millimeters to take advantage of the space available in the handle when closed.
My collection so far: 52100 Military (2); 52100 PM2 (2); 52100 Para3; Stretch2 V-Toku; KnifeWorks M4 PM2; BentoBox M390 PM2; BentoBox S90V Military; Police4 K390; S110V PM2; SS Delica AUS-6; Wayne Goddard Sprint VG-10
Wish list: Hundred Pacer; Sliverax; Mantra; 52100 PM2 SE; Kapara

For its type and size the Para Military 2 sets the standard. It is already offered in various combinations of materials. A quality improvement would address some shortcoming in design and, individual preferences aside, I can’t see any that would be needed. I think the basic, G10, S30V, plain edge Para Military 2 is as perfect a knife in its class as there is on the market.

Of course that is merely my opinion. I would be interested in others' if they focus on what might be better than what we now have.

Some things I would like to see put on the knife would be less up sweep at the tip of the blade, maybe a version with no lanyard hole and a wire clip

I'd like to see a bit less of the choil in the blade so the blade to handle ratio was a bit more even. As it is, the blade is pretty short for how big the knife is.

I’m thinking they could add a little bit of contouring to the handles. Maybe a fluted Carbon Fiber S90v sprint would be awesome.

PM3 for me would have FRN scales and a wire clip and maybe widen the scales (across) just a smidge

Coke bottle curves/swells to the handle.
Use the stop pin from the para 3.
Cleaver pattern or big @$$ sheepsfoot blade option.
Coarse treaded/jimped back spacer, variety of materials/colors to choose from.

Or maybe none of it. My 52100 pm2 should land Saturday.

I think it is great as is. What I want to see is a Fluted Ti Para2 with an integral compression lock. We have been talking about this one for years and I believe that there was even a prototype made. Please! Take my money! S30V would be fine.

Maybe some contouring. But there's nothing that really needs *fixing*.

If the rumored FRN model comes to fruition, I would love to see some slight contouring, a lá the Slycz Bowie.

I’d like to see heavier contouring like the bushcrafter, or like Bark River’s Bravo1 or Aurora.

I don't think that would be very "pocket-friendly"...

Probably not for dressier clothing, but sure would be sweet to use. Cargo pants and backpacks would carry a bulkier folder just fine.

I've generally liked the Manix more than the PM2. So i guess I'd like a more ergonomic handle, the PM2 isn't that hand filling. Though I do like its lighter weight and smaller pocket profile, things I'm sure directly relate to this difference. I'm somewhat indifferent on the compression lock. It's fine but I don't like how closing the knife left handed means I'm barely holding on to it. And the cutout in one side of the handle isn't ideal to me. These are minor dislikes though. Probably my main gripe is the relatively weak detent and no self close vs a ball bearing or back lock. A back lock para military might be weird though. At least it's not a liner lock.

I think the PM2 is pretty much perfect, except I'd like a stiffer detent. My DLC became too easy to open over time.

For my sized hands a 10% increase in size across the board would be nice, similar to the difference between the original and 2. I think that would make the PM3 less popular for the general market though.

Probably just contoured handles. Really wouldn't change anything else.

Oooh, I hadn't even considered the possibility of an FRN model. I'd like that, please, along with a Flytanium-style lanyard tube (no peening), and a deep-carry wire pocket clip, as already mentioned.

Enlarged finger space on the handle - PM2 has enough handle length but not enough fingers space on the lower side of the handle; even Delica 4 has more.
Shallower finger choil.
