Delica Wharncliffe - s30v vs HAP40?

#1

Post by chrickso »

Hi all. I’m getting more than a little antzy waiting for the hap40 wharncliffe and it dawned on me that, having no experience with hap40, i don’t even know if it’s worth waiting for when I could just grab an s30v one right now. could anyone enlighten me on why one would be better than the other?

maybe worth noting, this would be for EDC and most frequent uses are for packages, food, threads, etc. so i do have at least some concern about the hap40 not being stainless in case i don’t get to wiping it off right away.

Nothing wrong with S30V. I haven't had any corrosion issues with Hap40 whatsoever, and I live in a very humid climate. It's one of my favorite EDC steels. It's easy to sharpen and has excellent edge retention.

I will say the only downside to Hap40 is the SUS410 steel that most of the blade is composed of will really show scratches, especially if you cut cardboard with it. So if you think that will bother you, S30V will stay prettier looking.

VG10 with black FRN, don't have to worry about the blade showing scratches and getting a patina like on the hap40/sus410 and don't have to worry about the frn getting stained from dirt like on the orange frn of the s30v and hap40 models

i should note, i have lovingly carried the vg10/black frn delica wharncliffe since i ordered it on release day. i’m just looking for a second one to mix it up a bit and longer edge retention would be appreciated. i would most likely swap the new steel and still carry the black frn.

We know. Do you have the s30v version? I only had the black vg10 version. Not really a fan of the bright orange frn

I have the CS s30v version, I choose it as it's basically the same price as the vg-10 with steel I prefer and plan to swap the frn with a gray delica I have when I have spare time. Other than it not being discreet I don't mind the bright orange.

I really like HAP40 and I am holding out for that one.

That said, S30V is probably the better overall steel. They really are not very far apart in terms of edge retention (in my experience) and the S30V is stainless. If S30V wasn't the boring plain old vanilla flavored steel it has become I think most would prefer the S30V version. It is a great steel but has become somewhat ubiquitous. The S30V version is offered at a great price too.

The Hap 40 Wharnie is a sprint run. I'd go with that one. :)
Time for another :spyder:!
