Gentlemen's choice - urban k390 or chaparral light weight?

#1

Post by OuchPaperCut »

Not saying I am a gentleman, but I am considering these two knives. I currently have a G10 dragonfly but want another knife (you know the drill). My preference is for smaller blades that I can discrete carry. The fact that the urban is a slip joint is irrelevant to *me*. I suspect I should buy the sprint run while it is available, but there will always be another potential sprint run small knife to consider in the future if I don't grab this particular one.

What would be your recommendation?

Cheers,

I’d go with the Chaparral.

My Chaparral should be arriving tomorrow and I can't wait! Look up member "UKE" review of the Chap. Very nicely done, also has some high quality photos and comparisons with other knives of similar size.

"Gentleman's carry"?

CF or Raffir chapperal.

The choice between the two FRN models you listed is too close to call...

I have both and love both. It's a tough call. If I had to pick just one, I'd go with the K390 Urban. I like the ergos, the blade shape and the steel slightly more and as you mentioned, the fact that it's a slipit is irrelevant. That being said, you'd be a happy camper with any of them.

I own both of these, and use them both with some regularity as travel knives for jurisdictions with rules that are more restrictive than my home.

I'd go with the urban for the K390, as long as you're aware of it's non-stainless nature and willing to take care of it.

I have both, but most days choose the HAP 40 Caly 3.

We're certainly not doing the OP any favors here hahaha. So many great knives in that size range, you really can't go wrong. Already have a Sage 5 with the Chap on the way, but I've also been eyeing that Caly jr sprint!

Nothing wrong with either choice if FRN. If you want the carbon the Chappy is good. XHP is a great stainless but K390 gets so dang sharp it's just stupid. I've really been enjoying K390. I think the answer is a K390 Chappy but who knows if that chappy will ever get anything but XHP

Can you even find a k390 urban? They seem to be sold out. If you can find one at a reasonable price, get one. If not, the chap is great too.
I’m sure you can find the k390 but you will probably have to pay a premium for it. Chap is probably a better deal right now.

I don’t know if I would call either one of those choices Gent-y. Spyderco should make true small dress knife done tastefully. Is it possible? Crazier things have happened.

You mean like Kopas and Kiwis?

I'd love to see more Kopas...

If you can appreciate better materials, fit and finish go with the CF Chap, you won't regret it.

If you want something that holds its edge 3x longer than the chap, get the k390 urban.
