Spare parts are a difficult subject in my eyes. Living in Europe sending a knife to spyderco for repair is out of the question.( the chance of losing the knife is to big.
So if it is possible to get spare parts it would be Great.
But the parts themselves are the difficult things.
I would not send replacemend blades out by example.
What i would do is to send out the basics like screws , the plastic bb cage of the manix , pocket clips , springs , ...

Paying for the stuff is natural for me. As long as the pricing is fair. Not the price of a new knife for a couple of,screws and a spring for example. But i would never believe spyderco would so that so we are safe with that one. :)

I am wondering if you have read this entire thread? If not I think it might show that “merely” supplying the basic parts is much more complicated and a complex business process than might initially be assumed.

First off my post is just my opinion what spyderco does with it is there choise. Second you are correct no i did not get the opportunity to,read each and every post because well i just returned to the forum and i do not have the time to sit on my ipad all day so sorry of i did not found the text you are refering to.

And i understand it is not easy. On the otherhand nothing in life is easy if you want to do the best job you can. And spyderco always pulls true one way or the other.
Look at the Nirvana i am sure it was a pain in the... for Sal and the rest of the crew to pull it off but it is in my collection so they did it.

Also it is not like it has never bin done before other company's do it so in time spyderco could grow in to it also if they want it. I do not think there are crouds of people demanding it and if there are then its there problem. Spyderco is doing a fine job as it is. And i think every member and i am sure yourself included here thinks the same way. :)

Hi Husq,

Scales change as the model evolves and and may not fit older parts. I will say that there arequite a few companies/makers making aftermarket scales.

I havent been able to find any basic G10 like original. They are what I like best :)

Nothing! Iol.

I bought a PM2 grey CTS-20CP and the original owner has changed the scales to CF custom (did not come to me with the original). While they are nice and nicely made, I prefer the original SPyderco G10 in my hand. I know I wont be able to buy the original grey as they were a sprint run. Id Love some Rex orange or Maxamet grey If there was a pair lying around. I know its not your policy though.

I understand Spyderco's position on this, especially due to the number of models, variations, and progressions that Spyderco has produced. I also should state that I've had nothing but great experiences with Spyderco's customer service. I would love to see, however, some sort of information published on discontinued models to allow for future service if needed. Case in point - I recently purchased a Nirvana on the secondary market that had been used to **** and back. I don't know how the previous owner beat it up as much as he did. The bearings (primarily the cages supporting the bearings themselves) are in bad shape, and the bearing race washers are gone. I contacted Spyderco, but there aren't many options available since this knife is no longer in production. I don't want to turn it in for credit on a future purchase as I really like the knife and it's still very usable, but it would be nice to at least see specs on things like washers available so that consumers can order replacement parts, as needed.

In relatively new to spyderco, but everything I've read here seems to show they want to help out customers. And the knives I have so far are great quality so I don't
envisage needing slot of spares, I've only got three but on in particular (tatanka) was quite expensive.

As an Australian customer the send it out to us option isn't a practical one. With a 300 dollar plus knife for example, which is what the more expensive ones cost here, I plan to keep it for a while and am not going to send it anywhere internationally, it's to risky, expensive. Luckily we have a helpful distributor here but it would be good to know that there is a fall back if they were to cease support for whatever reason. If you do something stupid like strip a torx screw head, or brake a clip. Or I imagine the heads of screws can wear over time, I'd be willing to pay and would think it'd be reasonable to see parts availability only for items that can be removed and replaced without voiding the warranty policy already in place. I reckon that's be a good place to start, with the higher price knives and see how things go. It's really two issues though, a domestic issue and an international one, obviously I can only comment on the international one, sounds like the domestic service is stellar and if I was living in the states I'd just send it in. It's really a matter of how important the international market is, for me personally as an international customer, warranty support and parts support are critical to me for high price items. Incidently I bought these first few knives not realising support was limited in this country, so if the distributor here were to go out of business I'd be on my own. And without some practical support from spyderco in the US I wouldn't be able to feel confident buying the higher price knives. Which would be a shame cause they're really great. My two cents worth. This is a long and contentious topic. I highly suggest you get your favorite drink and read your way through it. The arguments don’t need to be recapitulated here again. Then, you will be familiar with the different arguments and perspectives. As I said, it is complicated but worth understanding.

I think I'd like to comment on Des' very nice comments. I don't think it's a matter of how important the international business is, I think it's a matter of what is possible and reasonable. We try very hard to handle our international customer base as fairly as we can. Our Distributor in OZ has been with us longer than any other distributor, almost 30 years. That alone says something about our desire for long term relationships with our Australian customers. We've been handling these cases on an individual basis and I believe our customer service department has been fair in their responses. I speak with Charlynn constantly about international customer issues.

I personally visit the Australian knife forum. We have many visitors here on our forum from OZ. It's a small world and all of our customers are important.

Wow, thanks for responding Sal, I admit I didn't read everything and like the bloke after me said it's a complex issue and I should read it when I have some time. So my take on it may have been somewhat simplistic. As you say though your spot on with the distributer here, the extremely positive experience I've had with them both pre sales and after support has been some of the best I've had. I gotta say I wasn't of aware just how long they've been around and affiliated with spyderco so that's great to know. I can see myself buying alot more of the knives in the future cause of it. Thanks for taking the time to respond.
