SpyderRench problem

#1

Post by ian »

I love my Spyderench, and I use it all the time. It's a beautiful piece of enginering. Whoever designed that thing is a genius.

The one real nitpick I have with it, though, is that the worm gear and rack in the adjustable wrench are a poor fit for one another. The cause is probably that the movable jaw of the wrench doesn't fit very well into slot in the main body; not really suprising since it's a rather complicated

casting. Adjustable wrench manufacturers have been doing it for years, but the average crescent wrench looks like it's probably machined.

Anyay, the problem that this is causing for me is that when I go to turn a bolt, specially a larger one, the teeth on the jaw slip up onto the teeth of the worm gear and get stuck there. It's happened twice now while attempting to tighten a nut on my bicycle. I can unstick it by removing

the screwdriver/file and driving the jaw back down with a drift of some sort, but it damages the worm every time it happens, and I can't put the tool back together with the wrench open, so it becomes hard to carry (as I don't usually carry suitable tools for doing that sort of thing)

Were it my job to fix this, I'd probably improve the fit of the worm/rack, either by lengthening the teeth on the rack so that they fit deeper into the slot on the worm, or by improving the fit of the jaw into the body of the tool (or both). Also, I'd extend the inside tail of the rack further into the tool, making the hole in the body deeper so that it'd fit with the wrench in the closed position. That way, there would be more teeth engaging the worm gear when the jaws are open more than 3/8", which is when the connection needs to be strongest (larger bolts generally having more torque on them, and having greater leverage against the jaws).

But of course, I don't have the means to do any of that to my own tool...

Has this been a problem for other Spyderench owners? Is your tool different from mine? Am I the only one? <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>

Thanks.

Hi Ian. Welcome to the forum.

Re: the Rench, sounds like you may have an earlier piece. I would send it in for repairs. We've solved that problem on current pieces.

I would also requst that you confine this forum to conversation regarding technical matters in design and manufacture and send repair Q's to the regular forum. Thank you for your understanding.

Oh. Sorry about that.

I thought I was posting in the regular forum. If you go to http://www.spuyderco.com/forum/, choose "topics from last day" from the pulldown menu and click "go", I believe you see postings from both forums. I wasn't aware of that at the time - I thought I was just seeing General forum. Now, if you click "post new topic", your post will go into the Tekno-Junkies forum. Perhaps a little confusing...
