I guess we could use whatever is super cheap that stains, maybe 1095, just to give it something interesting.
Brass or bronze would also make for unique handle slabs

I have a few reasons to say that, but they are all kind of related. It's basically about availability at more than one retailer.
For veterans, it's usually more economical to purchase direct from the SFO, especially since shipping is free for orders >$150.
Those who don't have access to exclusives, like people overseas, can get a chance at sprints.
Sprints will pop up at most regular retailers, so anyone who prefers one retailer over another can shop where they like to when a special model piques their interest.

Fortunately, I have no beef with any Spyderco dealers. I guess I just don't like monopolies on cool knife configurations.
