11/5 a bit of Native history....
http://spyderco.com/forums/showthread.p ... post194630
sal wrote:Actually, the Native was originally designed for Wal-Mart, many years ago. Camillus was going to make the knife, but the deal didn't happen. Hence the BRK 1st generation model. The model has gone through 4 steels and a number of variations and has now gone full circle.

The Wal-Mart deal has been in process for many months. They are testing one model in about a third of their stores. They are only carrying the Native in plain edge, S30V. I couldn't say anything here because Kelly wanted to inform our dealers first. She sent out letters last week. Very high integrity lady.

The Native suffered the same "situation" as the Caly jr. The large dealers don't want to stock more than "one plastic handled Spyderco of the same size". The Delica has always been our best seller (3" blade) so the 3" Native and 3" Caly jr. never got a shot at the "big market".

The specialty knife shops, like Country Knives, carry all of the models, for which we are grateful, but their are few of those type shops.

The original plan was for byrds, but Wal-Mart wanted a USA made high quality folder. They are difficult to work with, because of all of the details, but they are extremely professional.

Hopefully the Native will do well in the "big Market".

11/5 a tid bit about the strength of the new endura coming out:
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showt ... p?t=371522
Sal Glesser wrote:The Endura hovers between very high medium and low heavy duty. These are pressure tests, not impact tests. All of our knives are spine tapped a number of times during the manufacturing process, but they are not destructive taps, enough to test the fit and geometry. They are again tested in QC.

The Endura 4 with full, but nested steel liners are well into the heavy duty range. We'll have more consistent testing done when they are in production.

11/6 just a tiny bit more concerning endura:
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showt ... p?t=371522

QUOTE=Sal Glesser]Hi Victory,

The limited edition "Waved" model made by the factory is not any weaker than the stock model. Waving the model by cutting into the hole does weaken the blade by 15% in our testing. That 's why we made the limited edition.

SD is a deep subject. Just having a knife does help some, but without training, awareness, sharpness, etc. it is limited.

The Endura 4 has a waved version coming out next year.

That's one of the main reasons I had to put myself on a budget, concerning knives.

I'm still out of a job, so I have to get by on considerable less money than I've been used to.

I don't think it's right to deprive my son of "fun things" when he's staying with me and continue buying knives.

I will buy a knife every now and then, but not every week anymore which I did in the past.

Been a slow news month for Sal quotes (must be busy making and selling knives or something). Here was last info regarding the Swick posted 11/9

http://spyderco.com/forums/showthread.p ... post195855

The knives are finished except for sharpening, engraving and sheaths. I'd guess another few weeks.

We ended up with about 480 of them.

We haven't done pricing yet.

Sal is a lot harder to catch over in Blade Forums but I found a minor news item: 11/28 regarding the new delica/enduras coming out.

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showt ... 465&page=2
"I guess if reaction is good, we could possibibly make a "low ride" (deep pocket) clip as an accessory.

sal"

Now we have to figure out by what means he measures a good reaction. How do you weigh your cereal in this case Sal? ;)

[quote="sal"]Hey Catamount,

That's a good question. The original plan was a sprint, but reaction to the Caly jr in ZDP was better than guessed.

The new Delica 4 is a highly refined model (dual nested skeletonized stainless liners, etc.) and a ZDP version might be a nice offering.

The down side]

Sure is music to my ears!

Sal responded with the following to a question on sharpening a Case knife on the Sharpmaker...
sal wrote:Hi Waredbear,

It sounds like the edge on the "old Case" was gone. More in need of a regrind than a sharpening.

'Stay on the corner of the gray/brown stones until it will catch your fingernail. It is actually a reprofiling. Done more easily with a belt, or our diamonds, but still possible with the medium grit gray/brown stones.

Haha! I didn't want to steal your thunder or anything, I was just so excited about this one, I just hope it fills the shoes of the knife in my mind. Only time will tell, but it seems like it might be the perfect one for me.

Oh no, no, no. Tis a public forum brother. I welcome threads on any Sal and company info regarding any future plans and of course information regarding the mysteries of Spyderco Past Events, especially stuff from other sites as he is hard to catch over at Bladeforums. ;)

12/4 Another good one! Looks like Sal has come out of hiding swinging!
Regarding the demise of the jigged bone Kiwi:

http://spyderco.com/forums/showthread.p ... ge=2&pp=15

[quote="sal"]We have a Kiwi for '06 with a red bone scale. We'll probably make a run or two. The Stainless version will hang around for at least '06.

The jigged bone was a nice piece and will serve for many years. Nothing lasts forever.

I've seen a pic of Deacon's dino-bone piece. My wife, Gail, has a dino-bone Kiwi. Santa Fe Stoneworks does some nice pieces as well. It's a fairly unique design. Ultimately it's you that drives the product line.

12/3 several questions were asked about the Byrd line:

http://spyderco.com/forums/showthread.p ... post202951
sal wrote:Hi Joe,

1. The black Cara Cara and Meadowlark were requested by the Military and they wanted clampacks. we're struggling with the decisions and methods to provide both.

2. The coating info is at the office, I'll chase it down for you next week.

3. The Stainless Robin and Finch are scheduled to begin shipping in December.

4. FRN Starling and FRN Finch will appear first, probably a couple of months. They are the very small versions (Ladybug size). We are still 6 months away from the FRN Cara Cara and Meadowlark.
