Marrage vs Spyderco collecting

#1

Post by qc »

PROBLEM--I am getting married soon and I currently grapple with the idea of curtailing my spyderco purchasing habit due my future wife’s desire to bite deeply into the American dream- large house, large car, large bank account! Could anyone share with me their way of making harmony with the missus while also staying abreast of your friends # of spyderco knifes? Also, is it wrong not to tell your significant other about knifes you bought to add to your already large collection? (mine thinks so)

Spyderco Collecting is a lot less expensive than marriage, maybe you need to reconsider or atleast get some agreeements about your lifestyle that doesn't have to change.

qc,

Here's how I do it...(this coming from a woman's point of view of course) Man, I sound like Anne Landers here!

I love knives (especially customs), my husband is just not into them.

Talk about it and reach an agreement/conclusion BEFORE you get married. Stick to it. Let her know how important collecting is to you and that you are willing to give and take. This makes getting you presents for your birthday, Christmas, father's day a no brainer for her. Also give her a chance to learn to like knives (remember it's all give and take but...keep an open mind about window coverings and wallpaper too).

At my house he gets the new 60 inch screen and that's great. My husband knows that next show I attend I may find a custom piece or that Sebenza I can't live without. He's cool about it and so am I. We agreed on this arrangement years ago and respect each other's hobbies.

We're both willing to eat cheap and drive 6 year old cars so he can have his big screen and I can have my new Koji Hara.

Dont ever, ever cover up a purchase no matter how big or small. It'll come back and bite you in the butt.

Oh yeah, congratulations on your upcoming nuptials!

I have been married for three years(last month) and have been collecting knives for ten. Your wife sounds like mine with her wants.
However I made it clear to her before we got married that knives was the only BIG hobby I had and that I was going to continue to collect no matter what. Just my 2 cents

Be up front, one of the best things I did when I meet my better half was tell her of things I do for fun and that they are a part of my life. She didn't totally agree with me, but she did accept them and that made it easier in the long run when getting new pieces for the collection.

I have been married for 5 years and we have a precious 17 month old boy. I have already started a collection of Q's for him. I have over 150 Spydies, but I am going to be thinning them out some because we really need a house. Rent is for the birds. I am tired of living in the city also. My wife knows how much I spend on my Spydies, and she rarely complains about it. I know that I will have to slow down on the buying alot when we do build a house. I rarely hide my recent purchases from my wife (I did try once when I got back from the Blade Show 2000 but I couldn't hardly pick my suitcase up because it was loaded with knives and she found out). Marriage is great. Tell your wife that this is an investment. Lots of Spydercos increase in value. Good luck!

Thanks for all the great responses! I must be lucky though... I failed to mention that my future wife has also taken a liking for knifes (spyderco especially, although not as much as I do) and is even considering placing this web site on our gift registry. To me there is some thing very sexy about a good looking woman with a knife clip protruding out of her front pocket. Does anyone agree?
Thanks again for discussing a topic near and dear to me!

My beloved looks sweet with her white Jess Horn but I'm in trouble if she straps on her Syderco Laguiole serrated!

My wife and I have been married for 44 years, and part of our secret is we really like each other! Also love, of course. The other part is that we NEVER keep anything from each other. It doesn't pay....
She collects what she collects, and I collect what I do, and that pleases us both. Of course, with the 3 kids grown, and 5 grandchildren, house owned, etc. it makes it a bit easier now... we made many sacrifices when we were young!
Congratulations, and here's to a great marrage!

Got to have the agreement up front and don't hide purchases. Causes more problems than the truth. Living within ones means can also go along way to peaceful marriage.

Joyce - there just needs to be more women like you out there! I can't imagine telling my buddies - "Well my wife went shopping today and brought home YET ANOTHER SEBENZA"

Well, it'll be a bonus if you get a partner who appreciates a spydernut. After all, her kitchen knives will stay sharp till death do us part... As for collecting spydies, there is no excuse better than having a complete bunch of sharp knives in your drawer!
