The combination of beauty of design, and the usefulness of knives. What other tool you own looks 1/10th as good? Knives have the ability to perform so many widely varied tasks. What other tool can be so effective a tool for self-defense?

I also wonder occasionally, if maybe there isn't a small percentage of the population that just flat has steel in their blood.

Variety plays a major role, even just within the manufactured world. Knives come in a bewildering array of shapes, styles, sizes, methods of carry. It is virtually impossible on the forums for one not to hear someone else, maybe even a group of forumites, praising the merits of a knife you might not even know about. If they're people whose values you admire or agree with, then you have to have that knife!

My $.02 worth.
