Wegner or Starmate

#1

Post by mpclb »

Hi all,

I asked this question about 3 months ago, got a lot of great answers, and then my wife turned around and bought a Sebenza for my birthday! Great wife, great knife!

However, I decided to sell the Sebenza last night for a number of reasons, not the least of which is the stress of carrying a really expensive (for me!) knife and having to constantly worry about scratching up the handles and all that!

So here I am again, with few more questions...

1) Starmate CPM-440V vs Wegner ATS-34. What's the difference? I have a Native with the CPM-440V now.

2) Utility: which of these knives would work well for everyday cutting tasks? I am not a hunter/fisher, nor am I really super-concerned about the ultimate knife for self-defense (because the best knife is the one you are carrying!).

3) Weight: Does the extra 1.5 oz on the Wegner make a difference?

4) Handle style: The Wegner appears to be more suited for the hand, but I have not been able to hold one yet...

Thanks for all responses!

Phew! Tough choices... Both the Terzuola Starmate and Wegner had their very own distinct advantage. If you want something with heft and a good trailing edge, that'll be the wegner! It has good steel with is easy to maintain. Starmate on the other hand, would have more of a tactical and utilitarian chore. Its a lot lighter and very well designed. If it comes to making a choice, for everyday carry, to me : it'll be the Starmate.

Thanks samo. It's kind of funny - everyone whose opinion I've asked so far has said the same thing - "tough choice". Both of these knives have their strong points. My gut feeling tells me that the reason this choice is so tough is that the Starmate looks so d*** cool

Oh yeah, and the other thing they always say is...."I'd get both" :0

These are my two most-often carried Spyders (with the blue inlay Native gaining fast). I find the Wegner to be more comfortable and useful.
