Re: How did ZDP189 go from a stainless steel to carbon steel?

It sounds like you're saying that the stain resistance of ZDP is just like the stain resistance of almost any knife steel--it depends on the heat treat. Is that right? This and obviously the Chromium content. There are many high-hardness high wear-resistant Chromium-Vanadium steel nowadays, and man...

Re: How did ZDP189 go from a stainless steel to carbon steel?

Carbon: 3.00%, Tungsten: 1.50%, Vanadium: .10%, Chromium: 20.00% , Molybdenum: 1.30% Obviously you don't know how much carbides can create 3%C. I repeat that another time. Zdp189 with the proper temper have all the Chromium in Chromium carbides; moreover it contains CR23C6 carbides, like all the st...

No. The iron is not modified in the creation of steel.
Pure iron at room temperature has a certain crystal structure (Ferrite); Carbon modifies it even in very small quantities.
You can find a lot of informations on these mineralogical phases in some pubblications about Ferrous Meteorites.

Re: V-2 or ZDP-189?

V2 is basically a non alloyed steel. It will behave like 52100/O2 and similia. I don't know the hardness but i can guess it's in the ~63 Rc range. ZDP189 is a ultrahigh Carbon/Chromium stainless(so to speak) steel(so to speak). According to Larrin it has ~ 36% carbide content; i don't know so much ...

"All stainless steel is essentially 440 stainless steel of some variation, just with other strategic elements added to it. Whether it is 154 CM, VG10, or even BG42, there are only two kinds of steel, ultimately, carbon steel, and 440 stainless steel." All the cold work high Chromium/Vanad...

My worry with these Russian makers would be trust that they are using the steel they say they are.

Why only with russians?
Maybe it's been decades since anyone wrote fancy names on 440C or on M2 and we've never noticed it.
All it can be only an enormous suggestion.

Re: Help! I need to be talked out of getting a Sebenza.

The underhardened part is solved since around mid-2013, as they now harden their S35VN to 59-60 HRC. Indeed. S35VN at 59/60 rc is a gimmick, especially when the japanese conterpart, the Super Gold 2 was hardened to ~62 hrc in Fallkniven knives (one of the rare example of SG2 factory knives) and in ...

Really? So, if I decide to slit my own throat do you think geometry is gonna be my savor???

You don't need a CPM 4V low saber hollow grind Manix to cut your throat ;)

you just need a piece of sheet metal, an appropriately shaped can or a piece of glass.

Re: Manix2 4v marbled carbon fiber exclusive

That's the argument *for* a Hollow Grind. No. A sabre hollow grind like this is all the time worse than a ffg.The more low the sabre grind the worse the geometry, moreover the hollow grind sticks in materials. A full hollow grind won't be an improvement over a ffg, and no, a hollow doesn't cut bett...

Re: Manix2 4v marbled carbon fiber exclusive

I cannot understand people's complaints about the hollow grind. Given a good steel such as 4V, does the hollow grind really impact the cutting performance in any meaningful way? Not meaning to provoke an argument, just curious. Geometry cuts, not steel. You can have the best heat treat of the world...

It's an awkward knife with a underhardened steel.

Hi Supracor, We opted for a stainless to bring the design into a broader realm. It was our first Puuko and out first collaboration with the maker. We also made the knife quite a while ago before we were using as many steels as we are now. Hard to please everyone. sal Thanks for the clarification :)...

Re: Fist in the Eye

Most of my experience with S30V has been from spyderco. It's my least favorite steel from them. I don't have a charpy or impact tester. All i have is what I've personally seen. S30V isn't that good relatively speaking. I thought spyderco did the mule team project exactly because lab results and the...

Re: Fist in the Eye

I ask because i can't understand why at Golden they have decided so  Spyderco has used 52100, O1 and BD1; these are all better choices for a zero ground knife used mainly for woodcarving. 5160, 1095, Aeb-L, A8, W1, 12c27, A2, and similia are the best choice, but there are also more wear re...
