Re: Spyderco/Phil Wilson Bow River
S35V would be great for this, as would something like CPM 154. I have fillet knives on S35V and could talk myself into a "need" for another one in that steel.

Re: Filleting Fish...
There are a number of options, including the Sprig. That one is tempting. In addition, less expensive fishing knives include: Warthers in S35V. These are traditional boning knives and hold an edge pretty well when going through bones. The blades are thin, but more like boning knives than fillet kniv...

I have some cheap kitchen knives and steak knives with Diamondwood scales that date from 1967. No cracking of the material.

Re: Why not make lockbacks with wooden handles?
Another possibility involves stabilized wood. Resins are forced into the wood in a vacuum device. The final product is not going to warp or split, if done properly. Knife making supply houses sell this stuff. I know a wood turner who does it himself, using readily available vacuum devices.

Re: Slysz Bowie CTS-XHP Chipping & Wired Burr
I have a kitchen knife in XHP, a thin blade with a fine edge. I have used it for boning out chicken and other work suitable for a 5" blade - with no chipping at all. The knife seems to take a finer edge than S35V and is very chip resistant. I can't tell you what is going on with your knife, but...

Re: Fillet Knife? Steel Types?
I have fishing knives in S35V, VG10, 440C and 12C27. The favorite steel, by far is S35V. I haven't tried a blade in S90V, but I am pretty happy with S35V at this time.

Re: Why do some denigrate VG10 steel?
If I am working in the yard, I want tougher stainless, and that means Vg10 or 154CM. If I am going fishing, I want VG 10 or S35V. If I am cutting lots of cord, or opening boxes, and want to use a pocket knife, I would rather have a very wear resistant steel, like ZDP189 or M4. I would not choose a k...

Re: Spyderco VG-10 Steel question
I have used many knives in 440C and VG10, and VG10 can be hardened to a higher level. I have seen clearly better wear resistance from VG10 compared to 440C. As mentioned, VG10 is a tougher steel. I have a hard time noticing a difference between VG10 and 154CM in pocket knife blades, but it also depe...

Re: VG10
Primary use and the entire knife package should determine whether or not a steel like VG10 is a good pick for anyone. I don't want a knife in ZDP189 for fishing, and would rather have VG10. Frankly, I would prefer S35V for fishing. XHP would not be a first choice here, as I would rather have VG10 or...

Re: VG10
I agree. For everyday use, VG10 is fine. I would rather have S35V in a fishing knife, but I don't go fishing that often. For what I use my pocket knives for, VG10 is excellent. S110V may hold an edge longer if cutting rope, as will M4. However, I don't cut a lot of rope each week. The entire package...

Re: VG10
I have quite a few knives in VG10 from Spyderco, Fallkniven, and Tojiro. The only time I have ever seen chipping is when I accidentally grabbed a Tojioro Gyoto (a thin laser blade) instead of the Western Deba for splitting lobster tails. The VG10 Deba is a heavy blade, has never chipped and holds an...

Re: Knife steel, will I notice?
You may notice the difference if you are doing a lot of cutting. Under normal daily use, I doubt you will see much of a difference. M4 does take a nice edge. The only time I really knew how good M4 was at edge holding was when moving, and sharpening gear was all packed. I went through weeks of cutti...

Re: 10" sharpening grinder - Tormek vs Mastercraft vs other solution
I have been happy with DMT stones in 600 grit (fine) and 1200 grit. I also have one of their extra hard stones, and these will even sharpen ceramics. The regular ones work fine, but I like to follow the 1200 grit with a fine Spyderco ceramic or strop. You can get DMTs in very high grit values, but I...

Re: 10" sharpening grinder - Tormek vs Mastercraft vs other solution
I like to use Ceramic stones (Spyderco) or diamond stones, or a combination of the two when sharpening some stainless steels. I sometimes follow with a strop loaded with 1200 grit silicon carbide paste. If sharpening high carbon steels, it is a different ball game. When I need to quickly restore an ...

I have a 75 mm Persian II in my pocket right now. I regret not picking up the bolstered version when they were available. For sure, I would get a sprint run of the smaller Persian in an upgraded steel or CF handle.

Re: Police 4 Discussion/Speculation
I would be interested in one in FRN and a good, high carbon stainless steel. Good edge holding is a must for me. This would be a backyard or outdoor knife, and would work for fishing, where I might want a pocket knife. If used in salt water, I can always get to a spot to rinse off a blade. A laminat...

Re: Slight rust on M4 spine...
I use a Lee Valley version of Ren wax that is much less expensive. It works on all my carbon steel blades with minimal chrome content - uncoated 5160 large blades. It works like a charm.
When I expect to need rust resistance, I make sure I pocket a knife with a steel blade in 154cm or VG10.
