Re: A change in tone

I joined this forum last Monday. Now it's Friday and I've been reading what I would call "furballs". We used to call them "flame wars" in the early days, but the dust-ups here are not as vitriolic. As most of you probably know this kind of behavior is not unusual in forums or clu...

Re: New to this forum and to Spyderco

Welcome, Michael. If you ever make it up to Denver, it is worth a detour to the Spyderco Factory Outlet in Golden. There you can see and even handle their current line of knives in a friendly environment staffed by knowledgable employees. This is a very well behaved forum, one worth contributing yo...

Re: Help Defining Off-Topic vs General Discussion Please

I like keeping it simple, as it is. Getting too pedantic leads to ever more hair splitting in what is essentially a subjective area. People are here because of their interest in Spyderco products and company, so topics that are "generic" like whetstone sharpening still have relevance to Sp...

Re: Manix 2 XL or ParaMilitary 2 - Which to get next??

Well, depends on whether you need it or want it. If it's a case of want, you kind of have to listen to those voices inside your head and go with which one the knife voices want.

Re: I really like FRN

I was about to remark that the best thing about a bright, obvious color is that it makes the knife harder to lose, or forget, but having lost my orange Dragonfly 2, that argument doesn't hold up for some of us. I think the edge — it's grind, shape and length determine what it is best used for and th...

Re: Sharpening forum

Unless the need is pressing, I'd say no. I tend to use the Search function to hone in on threads or topics of interest anyway. Less work for the moderators if you keep it simple.

Re: Ali Express / Alibaba.com

One possibility is to use a visible serial number on each knife. This number would be assigned by the manufacturing facility in coordination with the Spyderco main office database. It could be tracked as to where and when it was made, where it was sold (distributed) and which authorized retailer end...

Re: New to this forum and to Spyderco

Thanks for all of the nice welcome notes. Did anyone say you have to be sane to be a member here? I don't remember that popping up in the registration process. Of course there are many things I no longer remember, so I just trust to those voices in my head. :) Well, living here at 7000' winter has d...

Re: A change in tone

I have read through this thread and as a newcomer to the forum would like to offer a few comments. As I mentioned in my introduction, I spent a couple of years as a moderator on a gun forum. You think this place gets contentious? It is nothing like gun forums. This is, with a few exceptions, a rathe...

Re: I really like FRN

I was doubtful about FRN before I purchased my Delica 4. I had not bought or had experience with Spyderco knives so I was uncertain about the material and the "grip" pattern. However, I did like the blue and the brown, so I opted for the brown. I've had it for about a year I think and I've...

Re: New to this forum and to Spyderco

Thanks for the advice about Knifeworks. I'm not keen on buying from eBay sellers, although I've sold a lot of things there and maintained a 100% rating over the years. There are many questionable sellers there and I don't know enough about fake Spydercos to feel secure if I should ever spend serious...

Re: Ali Express / Alibaba.com

Given the global economy, access to foreign markets and basic greed, attempting legal remedies won't work. Like Prohibition, the "war on drugs" and keeping fakes out of the country — it didn't work, isn't working and won't work. I think we need a way to readily identify the real article an...

Re: New to this forum and to Spyderco

Welcome. :) Small world, I used to live just outside of Sunset TX, left when I was still a kid, but still have family in the area. Not very far from Bowie, that was the bigger town. :) I think my current town, La Veta, is bigger than Sunset and smaller than Bowie (as it was then). I had a school fr...

New to this forum and to Spyderco

By way of introduction I am seventy-two, live in a very small town in southern Colorado, retired, father and husband, Navy vet and a writer and lover of history. I spent a few growing-up years in north Texas in a town called Bowie where my father and sister were born. Being named after James Bowie, ...
