Interesting spalting in tamarind board

I bought some spalted tamarind wood this week from my local hardwood dealer. Check out this interesting spalting when I re-sawed one of the boards!

Re: Eagle Scouts

I'm glad xceptnl revived this thread! I originally posted back in the 2011/2012 time frame about my youngest son bridging over from Webelos. Well, I wanted to report that he is completing his Eagle project this month and will go in front of his Board of Review next month. We'll have another Eagle in...

Ryan - The D2 Para1 has always been one of my favorites. I agree with TDog and Bear - it is one of the smoothest of all my Spydies. Re: Scale Materials-Your thoughts Sal?

The composite materials industry has really exploded over the past 20 years. There are literally thousands of different types of compsites and laminates that could be potentially used by the cutlery industry. We tend to speak a lot about G10, but there are also G5, G7, G9, G11 and dozens of differen...

Re: UKPK thoughts. PIC HEAVY

The FRN UKPK and Urbans are a little more difficult to mod than their G10 predecessors. I've done it, but honestly, the Maniago FRN knives (e.g., Pingo and Squeak) lend themselves to modding much more readily. The G10 versions of the UKPK and Urbans are outstanding knives for modding. I've done doze...

Re: Durability of FRN handles over time?

I've got a much-loved Delica from early 1990s and it has seen loads of hard use. Nary a ding or scratch on the FRN. The stuff wears better than the steel, it seems...

Re: D2 steel question

My main issue with applying a wax-based protectant to the blade would be buildup. Wax has a nasty habit of collecting bits of dust and dirt and creating a waxy residue that can gum up the innards of your knife. It sounds like you use just a very light swipe - and that's probably OK - but you'll want...

I got a soft spot in my heart for the #1. For me, it is the culmination of the whole "Caly" family tree. It has the same DNA as the rest of the Caly clan, but the ergos are absolutely perfect. Pocket knives just don't get much better than this one... TedP P.S. - they are also great knives ...

Re: What is your favorite Stainless Steel Spydie?

My favorite SS-scaled Spydie is the original Co-Pilot. Before 2001, it was generally acceptable to carry while traveling by air because of its sub-2" blade. Boy, how the world has changed...

Re: Where's the Caly Jr. sprint? Would you still buy one?

The Caly Jr. *has* to be linerless. That's the soul of this knife - the light weight and maneuverability. Tarting it up with G10 and steel liners would make it... a regular Caly. That's not a bad thing, per se, but it wouldn't be a Caly Jr...

Re: Question about linerless pivots

The "D" shaped liners are very difficult to reproduce when making aftermarket scales for these FRN knives. (The internal spacers and standoffs also present their own challenges to replicate) I was able to do it with some very delicate chisel work on one set of wood scales - but gave up aft...

Re: Out of the Spyderco knives you own, which one is your favorite?

Day-in, day-out, my most loved Spydie model has to be the DragonFly2. It is something to do with the balance of weight and functionality - I can carry them in my suit pocket without looking like I'm "packing" at work - and I can carry them in my jeans and not feel like I'm under-equipped. ...

Re: Pawn Shop Spydercos, good or bad idea to buy?

I've never found a genuine Spydie in good shape in a pawn shop that was anywhere near a reasonable price. I think the Owners of these shops see Spyderco as a premium brand and charge extra for them. Consequently, they even overprice the beat up Spydies...

I've given up the hunt.

Re: 1 Week Dragonfly Challenge

I carry a DFly almost every day I'm at work and in a suit - and have for almost a decade. Nothing balances the weight, thinness, and cutting power of a DFly2. Pound-for-pound, my favorite Spydie model of all time. I've added three new ones since this pic... TedP http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/d...

I agree with Wrdwrght - the DF2 punches way above its weight. The Manbug and Squeak and Urban are all fine knives - but I find myself carrying a DragonFly almost every day.

Re: Spyderco Urban

The original G10 Urban was my favorite Spydie to mod with wooden scales. The new FRN version is a bit trickier to outfit with "woodies" because of the molded scales - you have to fabricate a standoff and use a washer on the pivot. Here are a couple of pics: TedP http://i1220.photobucket.co...

I got a pair of titan PM2 scales a couple of years ago from John Grimsmo. He does first-class work - the knife works smoothly as silk. The grey 20CP gets my vote. That steel is flat-out amazing. I've replaced the scales with some burgundy micarta from CuScaDi, though.
