Re: I'm going to EDC PE H1 until August

I carried a plain edge H1 knife for a couple months until someone stole it. I even sharpened it up and shaved with it in the shower. There was not a noticeable lack of edge holding and I preferred it to the serrated H1 I had in the same model. Thinning an edge and lowering the grit have been tricks ...

Re: Can someone help me understand what all the hype is for slipjoints lately?

I got a Byrd slip joint and carry it at work all the time. It has a strong detent, but I can close it without any fuss even compared to my Delica. It is in and out of my pocket many times during a shift, and it closes easier and faster than a locking knife. I have occasionally carried a locking fold...

Re: Sharpening with or without microbevel.

If you sharpen with a microbevel and performance goes down, you've chosen the wrong micro bevel angle. For instance, I want a 15 degree angle for my kitchen knives. I don't sharpen at 15 then add a 20 degree microbevel. I sharpen at 12 degrees then add a microbevel at 15. I typically use the Sharpma...

I'm in. I'll use my Byrd Slip-it, provided I can get it rebeveled and sharpened. I've not rebeveled it from the factory edge yet.

Saying something is heat resistant when it won't be affected by temperatures that melt tungsten is like calling air craft carriers big boats. Sounds like scifi to me.

Re: Silicon Additions for Improving Steel Toughness

The serrated edges are sharpened at quite a low angle on the ones I've had, about 7 degrees per side. A tougher steel might do better for this geometry.

If you're able to directly manipulate subatomic particles, the elements used to start with don't matter.

Re: How sharp should an EDC knife be?

I think the tests performed showed that getting a refined edge and then taking one or two really soft strokes perpendicular to a fine sharpening stone to remove just the most fragile part of the apex resulted in edges that last the longest, though they never start as being the sharpest. Don't know ...

I can't believe I'm saying this but when I was in school, many people carried knives, particularly in college. It helps it was a school founded to educate farmers and supply engineers to the state.

Re: Knife Ban question for you all.

Bodog pretty well nailed it. In a free society, banning of weapons is a presumption of guilt without trial on anyone who does or will own them. 99.99% of knives will never be used for a crime.

Re: Overturning of Knife Restrictions

And it's a shame. Those models have been restricted here as long as I can remember. Basically, you could own them, in the states I lived you could carry them, but couldn't carry them concealed. I carried mine in a belt pouch with my shirt tucked in so everyone could see it. You did have to be carefu...

Re: Overturning of Knife Restrictions

It's quite refreshing to see the knife laws rolling back from the politicians over reactions to knife fights in West Side Story. However, it is a never ending battle. There are a lot of people that want someone else to make them feel safe, and they will push politicians to take away scary things fro...

Re: Why such hate for Double-Edged Knives?

Nothing wrong with owning knives meant primarily as weapons. I carried a CS Safemaker, the old kind from the late 90s to early 2000s, with the 5" blade. They do have legitimate uses, it's just that we pray we never have to use it for it's intended purpose. It does help I lived in either NC or S...

Re: Factory knew and two different angles on the edge

I have said before I'd like some knife company to sell knives with no factory edge, just skip that part and let me do it. It can't take longer to do that than it does to unscrew some of the really wonky factory edges I've had, none from Spyderco though. I rebevel basically all my knives, so for peop...

Re: Why no sharpening choil?

I add them with a Sharpmaker brown triangle. Use the corner and keep the side of the triangle near the handle perpendicular to the edge. The slope on the cutting edge side helps prevent snagging, and they're not even the depth of the secondary bevel anyway.
