Re: rusty steels

I can see the appeal. After all, people will spend more for natural indigo jeans so they’ll fade in use. No doubt the garment makers rejoiced at the advent of colorfast pigments and thought it was an improvement that everyone would want. My gripe is that people seem to like a particular quality in a...

Re: Suggestion: everyone should design a knife

stop armchair quarterbacking Yup. Imagine a world where we walked in other people’s shoes from time to time. Actually...don’t. Your real-world feedback is valuable to Spyderco (and is a big part of the discussion on this forum). Knife designers make compromises and mistakes. It’s perfectly valid to...

Re: Caribbean SE Mega Thread

I have on my desk a device used in ocean environments which has fasteners made from 316 steel. It’s been used for years and they are absolutely pristine. You have to remember that both heat treat and composition affect corrosion resistance. The nitrogen steels are unique in that they have extreme co...

“It makes no difference what men think of war, said the judge. War endures. As well ask men what they think of stone. War was always here. Before man was, war waited for him. The ultimate trade awaiting its ultimate practitioner. That is the way it was and will be. That way and not some other way.” ...

Re: What makes a good knife/good steel?

SEF for a decent primer on why Europeans showed up in North America and infected the native Americans with smallpox (instead of the other way around) I recommend reading Guns, Germs, and Steel by Jared Diamond . The short answer is that people tend to trade in east-west lines. This is because the li...

Re: What makes a good knife/good steel?

A (heat treatable) steel is only as good as its heat treat. You can take a potentially acceptable knife steel, and heat treat it in such a way that it shatters when you drop it. You can anneal it and it won’t hold an edge.

Re: Is anything truly indestructible/unbreakable?

I would actually argue that this object is kind of the opposite of a black hole. My reasoning is a black hole has been defined as a region of space with maximum entropy. An object that does not allow any reorganization I would think could be called a region of space with minimum entropy. But as I sa...

New baby kept me busy, as well as crazy work deadlines. Trying to log on more, but there does come a point where you’re more or less satisfied with the collection and there doesn’t seem to be as much to discuss or add.

Re: Let's Get Serious: G-10 Handles Are Just Hard To Beat For EDC uses

I like G10 just fine, but Spydercos bi directional textured FRN is a phenomenal scale material for an edc. It’s my favorite material for my favorite EDC: the delica. That said, my current EDC is the smooth scaled nishijin R, so I’m really not too choosy with the scale material. Whatever works well w...

Re: Spyderco Magnitude

It’s a phenomenal knife, just not what I’d prefer to carry or I’d own one. The whole MSRP thing boggles my mind. I get that a high MSRP lets people offer things “at a discount” but it’s just so strange to me that it works this way with things like knives and guns. Perhaps there are other industries ...

Re: Perrin PPT

I have the original. Very cool knife and atypical for Spyderco in a few ways. Doesn’t look like it’d be ergonomic but I find it comfortable. As mentioned, it’s way heavy. If I were in charge, it’d be rerun with Ti instead of stainless, and I’d eliminate the back half scale. I also might make it 30-5...

Re: At what point does a collection become clutter...???

This will come off as glib, but you hit the nail on the head: when you decide it is clutter. Does having them stress you out? If so sell of the ones that don’t speak to you. I have a bunch, maybe 40? Some I haven’t used in years, some more recent purchases that I’ve never used, and I’ll probably sel...

Re: Ultra Thin Blade Spyderco: What steel and what design would you want?

Thinned out Delica in AEB-L. (I know this generally would be difficult due to the Japan origin, but we've seen S30V in a Delica so who knows). That is a good design idea. While I like the saber grind, do you at times prefer the original pointier Delica and Endura, like was on the older models? I li...

Re: You ever accidentally hide a knife from yourself only to happily find it later?

It's such a good knife. Might be my favorite handle design ever. A-freaking-men to that. A true "folding fixed blade" (actually more comfortable than mavy of my FBs). [Moment of silence for the D'allara, which officially died when that name was attached to peel-ply slabs] Regarding the or...

Re: Favorite steel!

For me it's more about which steel is in the designs I like to carry, as opposed to which designs carry the steel I like. So, if pressed, I'd say VG-10, because it's on the R, and Delicas. Interested to try super gold in the Massdrop Delica (which might just get here soon, only a year late but whate...
